Nice, #99 down to 130.1 and like you say, a very respectable trap speed. The leaders are running similar trap speeds, but Blake Young just hit 174.8 MPH. That is FAST for Mid Ohio! Must be catching a good draft?

The KTM factory team are running "sophisticated Magneti Marelli electronics package."

The KTM team manager states that

quote:

“It’s Superbike, so the electronics is probably the most important thing, other than getting the motor up to par. We think we’re in the ballpark with horsepower compared to some of the inlines [four-cylinder motorcycles], but it took a little help from Austria and a little help from some of my friends in Italy who have some electrical experience.”

Interesting post by Jens regarding the KTM in another thread:

quote:

http://roadracingworld.com/news/article/?article=4 5177

This is a great BS.... If the U.S. KTM´s are on the german IDM standart than these bikes are for sure illegal in the AMA (as they are, followed the spirit of the IDM rulebook, are in the IDM too...). Because when KTM offer to sign in for IDM they claim to get an 8% tollerance quote over their measurements. The board of manufacturers/importers have given their ok, did not think that KTM would expand that in the way they had done it. 100.000 Euro ECM is legal, yes. welcome KTM at the AMA.

You are confused. What Jens is saying is that if they are running the same bike as in IDM, then it won't pass a tear-down tech inspection by AMA. So either KTM are not using the same bike, or they are hoping to avoid a tear-down inspection. No one is claiming that the model of motorcycle is illegal in AMA. It's a tech issue, not an homologation issue.

Pretty cool.......I was really proud of both Geoff and The Elves that made this happen in something like 18 months.

Somebody asked today ...... "what can Geoff do with the 1190RS that other bikes can't do?"

I had to think for a minute.....

" Put lights on it and ride it home from the track without breaking any laws".

This does have the makings of a pretty neat deal!!

That's funny about the key ....... And true.. I watched Boyd yesterday as he turned the key and thumbed the starter. In fact someone posted the video I shot on the Ratpak records Facebook page.

If you see me today and need an Erik Buell racing key chain be sure to let me know.

>>>> sort of bummed they didn’t Q better today

Don't be. . . they are dealing with a most unusual problem unique to the Erik Buell Racing 1190RS.

The bike is light enough that significant parasite weight needs to go along for the ride.

If you want to get a sense for some of the dialing in . . . take a 20# barbell and hang it on your bike and then take your bike and ride it to about 98% . . .

I took one of the "old" (early design) wheels and tossed to a guy a bit ago. . . .you could hear the collective gasp in the crowd surrounding the 1190RS as the guy uttered "amazing".

Be mindful that there is a large motorcycle company. . . tens of millions a year into racing that spent millions "re-inventing the wheel" to get it the lightest they could . . many engineers worked two years and they were amazingly successful and ended up with a GREAT wheel . . that weighs a couple POUNDS more than the Erik Buell Racing wheel.

This is fun stuff and those of you who have raced or followed racing know well the folly of expecting record times the first day a rider and a bike meet . . . I did mention to Geoff that I'd have been scared to death to even SIT on the bike . . like the 9 10 year old did.

It's a great day here today and some of the greatest Buell faces in the world have gathered to witness this event.

Very cool . . in 25+ years of Buellin' . . . I'm putting today right up there.

: )

Court

P.S. – Seriously . . .I am a responsible adult and would never put a the 9 10 kid on an 1190RS.

Good stuff. The elves will get the details worked out and be running up front soon enough. Despite the enormous amount of money spent and the ridiculous workload of the elves, this bike has received about 1/10th of one percent of the development time and money the front runners have received. The KTM has to have had a development budget that would make Erik weep. Maybe curse a little and say bad things also but we wont mention that.

Give the team some time, getting to this point is simply impossible. It could not have happened. No one could pull this off. Oh wait they are doing it aren't they? Never mind.

Absolutely . . I was there in the pits, watched some of the excitement, the changes, the adjustments and the surprise fixes and am thrilled.

Everybody toyed with the pocket dream of a 1st appearance podium but I think this is a great start . . . I keep harking back to where young Danny Eslick, who'd been pretty much ignored by a lot of folks, started on the 1125R.

Here we go . . . we're racing!

It's not a great start, but it's about what ought to have been expected. Geoff got stuck behind Beach (#10) and got passed by Anthony (#25) on the last lap. Will be interesting to hear what kept him from getting by Beach as his lap time was much better before getting stuck behind him.

The KTM managed to leap past Beach on the restart.

Consider:

Yesterday - Geoff was 3 seconds off the pace of the top riders.

This morning - Geoff was 2.5 seconds off the pace of the top riders.

Race - Geoff was 1.5 seconds off the pace of the top riders.

Just give Geoff and the team a little time to figure out how to get the most out of the bike and things will be getting very interesting.

You have to figure they were conservative both with the setup and the engine tune for the very first race. Better to collect data, get used to the bike, etc. than wad it up and risk getting hurt or blow the engine at the very first outing.

To finish first, you must first finish...

Another new challenge...... Figuring out where to pit all the extra weight that needs to be hung on the bike just to come up to the minimum weight ...... A new and rare problem unique to the Buell.

I passed a wheel around today to give folks a sense of what's happening here ..... Kinda cool to watch there eyes.

Mike and I, unfortunately, are making the drive back to Gotham but I'm excited about tomorrow and the future for the 1190RS.

Thanks for all the Badwebbers who came out to support the racing effort.

Kind of makes me think he should put the weight back at the hub/axle area he took off from..(just a thought).
None the less placing 11th is far better than 12th or 24th.

Actually ....... The hub, with the exception of being unsprung, would seem like an interesting idea.

I'm trying to think of a weigh ( little pun there ) to get it closest to the center of mass.

I suspect keen minds, at least 4 of them, are contemplating this tonight.

Fun stuff .......

Most exciting today was to see what happened when the 1190 RS/CF was rolled out. number 00027 was at Road America, #00024 was raced today and #00017 was displayed today.

I wonder what place the RC8 would have finished if it was not racing with a broken header, it was discovered before the restart, 6 laps in.

The axle is the last place you want more weight. Zero unsprung would be the ideal. Plus it is rotating weight which reduced acceleration. BUT it is a challenge to find the best spot. They will figure it out, a nice problem to have.

Added weight won't come down to being just as low as possible, front to rear will probably play havoc with suspension settings at this level of riding. I've spent some time scaling race cars and I'm curious to what level motorcycle racers scale at the track, if at all, and back at the shop. Are there magic numbers they look for? Does it vary by track? Is it all by the riders seat of the pants?

Since we complain when Speed doesn't mention Geoff, I think we should give them credit for talking him up last night. They seemed to be going out of their way to mentions him and even made a nice mention of Amsoil even though he was pretty far back.

For the people who want to see what Geoff and team are really doing, here are some numbers:

First Practice:
Best time - 1:26.117
Geoff's Time - 1:29.009

First Qual:
Best time - 1:25.639
Geoff's time - 1:28.497

Final Qual:
Best time - 1:25.005
Geoff's time - 1:27.543

Race:
Best time - 1:25.708
Geoff's time - 1:27.225

And while Geoff only finished in 11th place, his best race lap was 9th best.

The top riders don't find much speed because they've already refined things to an extreme level, but Geoff and team are finding ways to get faster - and this is just the very, very beginning.

All the other teams will show up at Laguna Seca with the same bikes they raced this weekend, but Geoff will likely have a better bike in two weeks than he had this weekend.

I don't expect a podium this afternoon, but I hope to see Geoff continue to make gains and I'm beyond excited for the rest of this season and beyond!

The lap times don't indicate any effect. Sounds more like a "my faceshield was fogging" excuse. Fillmore's personal best lap for the race was on lap #17.

And I found out that if you get aluminum wheels on it there is a $2700 discount, now if I could just find the 30K off coupon.... To SPEED's credit, they did show a split screen of the 9th place battle for about 45 seconds with #99 dicing it up with, I think, Beach and Anthony on the 20th lap. May was running 10th at that time. That was pretty cool.

Looks like the KTM is suffering issues today, best lap during warm-up was 1.28.4 there were some in the 1:29's.

Geoff only had one hot lap on the A-bike and did a 1:27.9 with a 173.5 MPH trap speed.

A-bike ready for race? I hope so.

Even with the 1190, I had thought they were going to get some quicker trap speeds. 10mph slower than the lead bikes.

Snowscum,

Traction control and the massive budgets of Factory Yamaha and Suzuki racing teams. No one else came close to those trap speeds.

Roger Hayden and Ben Bostrom for instance on the Jordan GSXR1000's had top trap speeds right at 171 MPH. Pegram on the supposedly uber-fast BMW SR1000 managed a best of 169.85 MPH. Geoff's best was 168.07 MPH.

Looks like Geoff had some sort of problem, his lap times went to hell on the last 4 laps or so. He had a shot at 8th until that happened.

Top speed is up a lot, he was almost 18 mph slower than the fast guys at RA now he is 9. Moving in the right direction.

from ebr's facebook page:

ý11th and 10th first time out. Bike was very solid and reliable, but we waaay underestimated the difficulty of set up with the extra 25 lbs of weight strapped on. Today with all that weight and some chassis changes we made trying to compensate for it (which included running a soft rear tire), we destroyed the tire mid race, and Geoff had to slow way down. We'll try to get some more testing before Laguna.

I've been the far flung representative of this rag tag band of E.B.R. supporters by wearing the May 99 shirt on the beach in Portugal this weekend.

Just reading the result and hoped for more (just being honest here). I see that good data has been collected. That is invaluable. Before the sun sets on the 2011 AMA season, I predict a podium for Geoff and the 1190.

Yes, that is Tony in that picture. I had a chance to chat with him before the races on Sunday. What a cool guy.

I also got to talk to a personal friend of mine that's on the Kawi team.... I'm guessing the Motul electronics on JD Beach's bike have a price tag close to or equal to what the 1190RS complete bike cost. JD's bike, or so I was told from the same friend puts out 220hp at the crank and 207 at the rear wheel. Add to that the traction control, input from the suspension potentiometers, GPS signals, electronic down shifters, etc JD should be doing much better than he is. Add all that "stuff" to the 1190RS, woooo baby. It was cool to watch Geoff actually foot shift the bike going down the pit strait and watching the rear tire/suspension move when the torque was applied.

+1 on Tony being a great guy.

I met him at the Craftsman Experience in Chicago, and he chatted me up about the 1190rs for about 45 minutes. Tony was extremely excited about the bike, and I enjoyed learning all about the process of designing and engineering it.

Fastforward to yesterday at Mid-Ohio. I walked up to the Erik Buell Racing garage, and Tony looked at me and said "A lot has changed on it since you saw it in Chicago. How was the ride from Indianapolis."

I'm amazed by Erik Buell Racing every chance I get to interact with the guys. I'm sure Tony has had 100,000,000 things going on since the Craftsman experience, but he instantly recognized me and picked up where we left off on conversation.

Tony . . like so many of The Elves and Buell owners . . is an amazing guy in his own right.

The next time you see him . . prod him for information on his "pre-Buell" racing experience.

Like Abe and about 14 others . . . the more you learn of his story and his background the more amazing it gets.

For me?

The fact that Tony, like Geoff, will stop whatever he is doing, not matter how busy he is . . when he sees a kids eyes light up looking at the bike and take a couple minutes to make sure the day is one they'll remember vividly 20 years hence.

Tony is an exceeding bright person, that's important to Erik.

But to me . . I continue to be amazed at what genuinely nice folks him and Geoff are.

Those of you who meet Geoff's folks at the races will understand.

The motorcycles are neat, the people are amazing.

Dave,

I wish the top speed were up a lot, but the 1125R clocked similar trap speeds in last years Mid Ohio event.

http://results.amaproracing.com/live/results/pdfre sults/rr/2010/06-midohio/sbr2ind.pdf

From race 2 at Road America this year and also last year, it looks like Geoff on the 1125RR was suffering roughly the same deficit, 10 MPH.

http://results.amaproracing.com/xml/rr/events/R112 0/sbf2ind.pdf

http://results.amaproracing.com/live/results/pdfre sults/rr/2010/05-roadamerica/sbr2ind.pdf

Seems like Erik Buell Racing are being very conservative with their new engine, not at all a bad idea in my view.

Geoff's max trap speed at Mid Ohio this year was 173.5 MPH during Sunday morning warm-up; that speed is significantly better than last year's on the 1125RR. But it appears to be a statistical outlyer as he didn't make that speed during the race. Perhaps the cooler air during Sunday morning's warm up session aided the engine compared to the warmer race conditions that afternoon.

"No, but the twins do suffer an inexplicable 10 LB weight penalty."

It is inexplicable especially when the twins (KTM included) are 10 MPH slower in the straightaways than the top IL-4s. There were 8 IL-4's that were slower than the 1190 down the back straight at Mid-Ohio though...but isn't that always the way it is? Even with the rules that supposedly make for parity, there is a big difference in straight line speed. The Buell was carrying a 20 pound block of lead under the seat. Ridiculous...but a correctable error. Let's get this corrected by the next race.

Having to add weight is a great thing……means you can maximized your performance by being right on the weight limit. That being said you have to be smart about where to place the weight and bolting 25# under the seat doesn’t seem too smart to me? This needs to be mounted as low as possible under the engine if you can to reduce the center of gravity (CG). What Erik Buell Racing needs is a heavy exhaust can and mount bracket. Just saying.

Don't be saying.

If you are thinking a heavy exhaust can and mount bracket is to be mounted under the engine to make up a 25 lb differential, that would be counterproductive because it puts a concentrated mass away from the cg of the bike. That is not smart. The end result would be a bike that is more difficult to steer in extreme transitions from left to right and vice versa than if the mass were located as close as possible to the center of the bike's cg. Do you understand why? The answer involves physics and moment of inertia principles.

I'm saying let the engineers figure it out. They know the bike and what it can do. We'd be just guessing. Capice?

Lets see you can either put the weight on the CG or you could put it below the CG which will lower the said CG. Making it handle better.....I am an engineer! Been building race cars and bikes for 25 years.

Sparky is spot on dead right. Bikes are not the same as cars in relation to weight and CofG.
If you mount weight too low you get a bike that is difficult to turn and steer quickly and that wants to understeer everywhere and run straight on under braking.
This is why rider weight and weight transfer are so much more important on bikes tan in car racing.
It may seem counter intuitive to put weight higher up, but that will aid steering and weight transfer under braking.
Ducati found that raising ride height by a relatively huge 20mm improved turning and front end feel of their GP bike this year for instance.
The optimum place for placing weight these days (assuming that the bike is good to begin with of course) would be directly under the seat and just above the normal CofG. This is one of themain reasons why most WSB and GP bikes have their fuel tanks repositioned to that location.

Scott (70rsss),

>>> or you could put it below the CG which will lower the said CG. Making it handle better.....

A lower CG can make a motorcycle more difficult to turn. Centralized mass is always good, but a lower CG, not so much.

Does anyone know if a more aggressive motor setup is going to be used at Laguna Seca? From talking to Geoff @ Miller, the 1125RR has higher performance cams than the stock 1190RS. Seems like these cams could be used now.

Blake is absolutely correct about getting the CG/CM too low.

Super low CG/CM may work great for cars but, consider how motorcycles change direction. Especially in quick esses or chicanes.

Rule for motorcycles:
If your weeble won't wobble it won't turn.
(You gotta lean if you wanna make it around that corner on a two wheeler.)
