"How stock was the TT I wonder? Sounds like it was just about right off the showroom floor."

As I posted above, Latus H-D/Buell couldn't get their race Buell to run at altitude so they flew Joe Kopp in, fresh from a win in the pea gravel of Lima, Ohio at the AMA GNC 750 race Saturday night and hooked him up with a fresh new Buell from a local dealer.

He made a great run finishing third. I posted a photo of he and Brian Anderson as they made their return down the mountain amidst the admiration of fans who follow tradition and line the route.

As for our bike, Brian Anderson took second on a TT that we made a change or three. Some of these changes were chronicled as we did them in earlier posts on this thread.

Ok heres my photo of a 90+mph fly by of the High Country Buell with Mr Anderson as the pilot. Great Job with the setup! Hope you guys do this again next year since Brian isn't retired anymore. =)

Here, watch Walker Pew, our High Country H-D/Buell KTM rider, go up against the top four riders in the 550 class of this years Pikes Peak International Hill Climb's "Race to the Clouds". In the group, Davey Durelle, 11-time champion in a row, Nicky Diamond, current champion Super Mottard racer, an Italian pro and a guy I forget, but you see him get off his bike on the right shoulder about half way up the mountain.

from 9,200 feet to 14,111, 156 turns, 12.42 miles in just over 12minutes - they battle it out.

Walker was fourth in the end, but had third till nearly the end of the race. They started several groups of five in this class, Walker was in the top group based on qualifying times. There are sections they hit 115mph, and several sections, like “Razor’s Edge”, you get a nice view of some of the shear drops.

The two in front of him are world class racers who do a similar hill climb in Brazil and the Andes. They finished first & second. The helmet cam is mounted on the third place finisher from Italy who was behind Walker most of the race, although you can see him figuring out how to make his move several times.

Our Buell XB12TT finished 2nd in the 1200 class. Ahead of Joe Kopp, Harley factory AMA GNC 750 dirt tracker, and behind only Greg Trachey, Ducati factory rider and current road racing champion and owner of fastest 1200 time up the mountain. Only in the paved straight-aways did he pull ahead of our rider, 46 year old Brian Anderson who has not run a race for 7 years until this year.

Our efforts and success was mentioned at the Buell sessions of the dealer show last week.

His name is Jeff Grace. Here is his video. Sounded like his bike quit but also heard he lost 6th gear and thats why he was dropping off from the leaders when his bike quit. Bummer for him.

Buell racers on podium in Pikes Peak Hill Climb

MILWAUKEE (August 6, 2008) -
High Country Harley-Davidson/Buell riders Brian Anderson and Joe Kopp finished second and third in the 1200cc Motorcycle Division during the 86th running of the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb, held July 20 on Pikes Peak near Colorado Springs, Colo. Anderson and Kopp rode Buell XB12STT motorcycles prepared by High Country Harley-Davidson/Buell.

Known as “The Race to the Clouds,” the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb follows a 12.42-mile course that includes six miles of paved road and 6.42 miles of unpaved road, climbing from a starting elevation of 9,390 feet and finishing at 14,100 feet. The course includes more than 150 turns on a road that clings to the side of the mountain. This year’s event included eight motorcycle classes and 87 motorcycle participants.

Riding an essentially stock Buell Lightning XB12STT Super TT motorcycle, Anderson finished with a time of 12:24.713 to place second in division. Kopp completed the course in 12:41.403 to place third on a modified Buell Ulysses XB12XT. The 1200cc Motorcycle Division was won by Greg Tracy on a Ducati, with a time of 12:06.602. Eleven riders competed in the class.

Kopp, the 2000 AMA Grand National champion, is a member of the Harley-Davidson Wrecking Crew and currently is in second place in the 2008 AMA Grand National Twins series, racing for the Latus Harley-Davidson/Screamin’ Eagle team. Kopp served as Grand Marshall for the motorcycle divisions at the 2008 Pikes Peak Hill Climb.

Anderson has won a Pikes Peak Hill Climb motorcycle division on four previous occasions, including his first attempt in 1981 and most recently in 2000, when he raced a Harley-Davidson/Rotax flat-track motorcycle in the prestigious event. He is also a former AMA Expert flat track racer, who retired from competition in 2001.

“It was a real surprise to get a call from High Country Harley, asking me to participate in this effort with the Buells,” said Anderson. “I was really impressed with how the XB12STT performed. Now that the lower section of the course is paved, you need a motorcycle that can be fast on both pavement and dirt, and the XB12STT fit the bill. It’s like a sport bike on the pavement, and in the 100-mph dirt sweepers near the top, it worked like my XR-750 flat tracker.”

Anderson said that the Buell motorcycles he and Kopp raced were close to stock.

“The only non-Buell component on the bikes was an aftermarket racing exhaust,” said Anderson. “The electronic fuel injection on the Thunderstorm V-Twin engine was a big advantage, as it self-adjusted for the big change in elevation during the race, and maintained good engine performance.”
