It seems that lately after returning home the bike “vents off” through the overflow hose until it cools down enough. Not talking just after filling, although it will make you really aware of that which is pretty normal. This is after fifty or more miles on the tank so the level should be well below the fill cap. Latest flash on the ECU so I know if the fan runs on then it’s pretty hot, and yet in most cases it shuts right off or only runs a few seconds after key off. Does anyone know if the fill cap is supposed to hold a little pressure in the tank in which case the smell could indicate the cap is not holding pressure? Definitely see an imprint on the gasket from the ring around the tank opening but the gasket still feels flexible. Open to ideas.

I've noticed the same thing, especially after riding the bike around town (lots of low speeds and stops). I think it's a product of the gas tank (frame) getting hot, and the gas vapor has to find somewhere to go.
I don't think there's much - but it doesn't take much to smell strong.

Yeah, unfortunately the frame (fuel tank) gets pretty hot. I can hear the gas gurgling right after a ride. Just wondering if the cap was supposed to hold some of that in. Of course I moved into a new house last year with a garage for the first time in my life which does make the smell more of a problem. Have to be sure it’s done venting before closing the door.

Well I guess having that emissions canister hanging off the left side of the engine has a purpose...

My '06 50 state model never released fumes, of any kind, at anytime.

If I end up back at the house with a full tank I'll place a box fan beside the bike. Cools the bike down faster and dissipates the gas smell.

The fuel tank cap is completely sealed. But the fuel tank has open ventilation line, there is a tube is attached to the tank (near the fuel cap on the right side under the airbox) which runs to the left foot peg. When the frame gets hot the gasoline fumes evaporates thru that line. It can even drip with gasoline condensate on the ground and gasoline smells.

Also, the vent tube ends right above the helmet lock. DAMHIK
