I'm getting a late start on my winter maintenance. My muffler needs a repaint (again). The rust wasn't reeal bad, but the back end has pretty severe pitting. I'm thinking of using Cold Galv/Zinc-it, before I primer and paint with Rustoleum (high heat) engine paints.
Any thoughts on using Cold Galv, as a base coat?

Nothing is going to really last. Especially if there is active rust/pitting. Youll need to get the rust blasted out or chemically neutralized (naval jelly or the like)
A good primer, possbly your galv, and some good paint. But there is a lot of heat and abuse on that area. Powdercoat / ceramic would be the best longest solution. Otherwise you can always wire brush it as clean as you can get it, get it up to temperature and hose it down with a can of VHT black spray paint, and then remember to reapply as needed

I'd suggest a good cleaning with a non-ferrous brush (brass/stainless steel) and then treat it with 'Ospho' or the like. That'll convert whatever rust is left to an inert form. And, the Ospho acts as a primer for paint. Then give the can a couple of coats of BBQ satin black.

The cold galvanizing paint is only a band-aid. It acts as a sacrificial material for corrosion. If you paint over it, it can't work. If you don't paint over it, it's not attractive, and it'll wear away fairly quickly.

I wish Buell made the mufflers out of stainless steel.

I've had my muffler blasted and ceramic coated twice, it lasts about 2 years or 40K miles. The last time I wire brushed it and used high temp spray paint. Its lasted just over a year, though I ride my uly less now so only around 10k, but cost about 1/10th of the price.

6 of one/half dozen of the other.

Last repaint, I sandblasted mine close to white metal using a friend’s sandblast box, wiped it down with acetone, and then used a 3 step header paint system- primer, paint, and clear. I think it was VHT Flameproof. I pre-baked it using a hot air gun in several stages, then mounted it on the bike, ran it for short periods and slowly cured it in several stages. It’s held up pretty well.

That said, I wish I had the skills and a TIG welder to build a replica of the stock muffler in 304 stainless steel.

I cleaned it up with a wire wheel/drill, and put the cold galv on a couple of days ago. I've already bought the rustoleum paint/primer, so I will probably do that too.
And then, do it again in a couple of years...

I have not used yet on Buell muffler But used their tank sealing kit on the old flat side HD tanks, after brazing repairs. Still working 8 years. Did box on square body chevy, still rust free...now that is a testament. Have a rattle can on shelf to do a Buell, just havent got to it. Its spendy. It works. Follow directions. Soon will outlawed, probably already is in California.?
