I have an 06 that is driving me crazy. I've owned it for 4 years. The first year was great! No issues! Then the ECM went due to cracked connectors ( it had already been relocated ). Fixed that next the front plug wire wore through, that took out the fan and fuel pump. I have been fighting an overheating issue ever since. I replaced the fan as well as the fuel pump and it runs great around town, but as soon as I get up to highway speed it the CEL comes on with an O2 code (13 if irr)and eventually I will get skip spark. Doesn't matter what speed 65 of 85 it will happen. I've tried to datalog a couple of rides and the messages say connection error a lot.

New fuel pump, new O2 sensor, new fan, cleaned grounds, direct wired the O2 sensor to the ECM, replaced the head temp sensor ( I had one), and checked the intake seals. AFV is at 128 and the operating temp gets up over 400 according to ECM Spy.

I'm ready to go back to a carb bike, I don't understand FI.

I've attached the last log file I have. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Did you replace the whole fuel pump assembly by new OEM unit or just the fuel pump motor? What is the fuel pressure at high RPM? The fuel pressure regulator might be bad and maintains it too low. The injectors might be clogged. TPS might be bad. Crank position sensor might be bad.

I installed fuel pressure gauge to monitor pressure because of I know how crappy Buells are. I just don't trust anything on these motorcycles.

It's not FI. It's that the Buell is a lousy design for engine management. I've experienced the exact same problems you describe...and a few more. Lessons learned. The cultish handling comes at a price: poor design and quality, and a need to be blindly committed to the cult, to be able to overlook said deficiencies.

I've all but quit caring about keeping my Uly running...it's running as an air-cooled hooligan bike right now until it dies or I wreck it.

Ive never had those issues, so..Just a stab in the dark. Could the coil be acting up as it gets warm. Seems like you may still have Ecm problem

As you know, if it's running hot just cruising down the highway, then it's likely running lean. Checking the easy stuff first, I agree with Tpehak, scrutinize the TPS.

have you tried turning off closed loop by disabling the O2 sensor in ecmspy? i'm struggling with a surging problem on my '06. one of the things i tried eliminating was any o2 problem, so I disabled it with ecmspy and it ran noticeably cooler (fan hardly came on). still have surging problem, but i did learn that it will run richer.
also, have you checked static timing?

turn off O2:

With an AFV of 128 you are running very lean somewhere in the "learned fuel area" and the ecu is adding 28% more fuel to compensate. You need to check fuel pressure while bike is running to see if fuel pump is keeping up.

The high AFV and surging are also signs of the easy-to -check intake seal leak.

I'd check it again, really, really, well before I moved on.
