Over time it seems a bit of slack has developed in my throttle. There seems to me about ¼” of slack in the system before a twist of the grip begins to actuate the throttle, enough that I am constantly having to roll the grip a bit with my thumb to take up the slack before the grip engages and I can give the throttle a proper twist. There is no roughness in the throttle action, and the throttle still seems to open fully at full stop, but the amount of slack in the system is annoying, and I am concerned that the cables may need replacing.

I gave my local dealership a call to acquire a new set of cables, and it seems this is one of the parts that has vanished from Buell replacement parts inventory, so, this brings me to my question.

Has anyone out there found a non-OEM option for these cables, and does anyone out there know first-hand the length of the throttle and idle cables? I’m going to try to give mine a simple adjustment, but if the cables need replacing, I’d be grateful for any pointers on where a suitable replacement might be found.

Many thanks!

Alex

Barnett could make some for you.
You should be able to take up 1/4" with an adjustment, though.

Thanks for the comment. I figured I would be able to get a pair made. Do you have any idea how long these cables are? I'm hoping someone will know so I don't have to tear the upper part of the bike apart just to take a measurement. I'm hoping to put that PITA off till I actually have to replace something.

Cheers!

No, I'm afraid I don't have a spare set kicking around to measure.
I put on Lightning bars and throttle cables on mine 13 years ago, anyway.

I would lubricate them and readjust. I would open the throttle all the way and see if your butterfly is wide open. If it's not then there's a good chance the cable has stretched. If it is wide open then it's fine and the push cable has just loosened up and giving you the slack you're feeling. That cable only has a little plastic nut that is only finger tight and can loosen giving you the play you're feeling.

The load on our throttle cables is so low, and the cable routing bends so gentle, that the cables should last nearly forever. The only area where there may be significant wear is inside of the metal elbows at the throttle body. Checked for broken strands at the cable ends, otherwise needing to replace those cables is pretty unlikely. Just adjust to taste. The stock setting is that there should be a few mm of freeplay.

I used revival cycles custom cable kit to build a throttle cable for the KLX last Summer. It's pretty simple to do and great to have this skill under your belt. They put a decent instructional video up on the website as well.

Your local dealer isn't being very helpful. They can be bought here if you can't get yours adjusted:

I just bought a set to have as spares less than 6 months ago.
