Yesterday I was a bonehead. Was over 100 degrees here and spent 2 hours in stop and go traffic. Did the last couple miles with the engine light on strobe mode. Cut over to the shoulder and just idled it along to home.
This AM everything looks good, but was a quart low on oil!
motor has 43k miles on it. Hopefully yesterday didn't kill it off. Oil light never came on, so I guess it had pressure at least

With the dry sump, system you had at least a quart in the swingarm tank.

I have had that same thing happen in extreme heat. The oil is part of the cooling system also. So when it gets that kind of hot some can vaporize off.

It must burn it off, mine never left a trace of where it went.

You’re probably good, but heat like that will sometimes cause rocker gaskets and timing sensors to fail. DAMHIK

It would probably be a good idea to change the oil out early.

Agree; like today!
At least top off the oil.

Yeah, I topped it off and rode the last 2 days and it seems OK. But really am thinking it might be time for an oil change. Oil was less than 1k miles, but still I know that long hot ride home didn't do it any favors.

Poor old bike. I used to make fun of the Uly and how ugly they were. Now I wish I'd bought one a long time ago. This bike is a blast!

As a side note, the service manual asks for you to run straight 60w oil above 80 degrees. It works. I ran it until I could not get it.

I now run Rotella 15 40. In the summer months I add a pint of STP or Lucas to make up for the difference. It does help in hot weather, running synthetic or not.

No, engine never shut off, just didn't produce power under acceleration (I tried not to beat on it, but had to get past a couple of cars)
I really think its safe now. But am questioning another issue.
The neutral light comes on when the bike gets hot (neutral switch has been disconnected) Now the bike also randomly turns the engine light on (not strobe, but ON) meanwhile its running fine. I've found other electrical issues in the bike. I wonder if theres a bad ground causing the engine light to kick on as well.
It happened once before this oil boiling hot day too

Have you checked the ground wire behind the headlights? On the front of the steering neck. Can cause all manor of weird light shows.

When the bike over heats it can vaporize oil. When it goes into "run skip" mode with the light flashing it is in safe mode to limp home. Reduced power.

This will not trip a code due to being a normal function when it gets hot.

Etennuly,Which ground would you be meaning? I did repair the brown one that goes to the turn signals. It was mostly broken. Im assuming there is another that's almost broken too.

I believe he's talking about the three wires connected to the front of the steering head behind the headlights. They tend to break even though they look good. Many have soldered these three wires together to a heavy single wire making a coil. Then this single coiled wire is attached to the steering head. The coiled wire can take the vibration better and is less likely to break.

My ground fix does the same thing but is uglier. I only had fat wire in red that day.
