Cheers Etennuly, I didn't know the newer bikes had a different bearing.

Yes it is the update for the 06/07. That is why I have one! Old style no longer available.

Well I opened it up today. To my surprise my '06 has the up graded double row bearing in it. I had been watching the how to videos and was perplexed when I could not pull the spacer out.

At 3,700 miles in mid summer of 2006 it went in for warranty for output shaft leaking. I presume they installed the up graded unit rather than fix just the internal spacer seal or outer seal if my bike even had the old style bearing from new.

I can tell you there is zero issue from lack of oil, or rust from setting. I pushed it thirty feet after setting for six weeks unmoved. After the seal was out oil oozed out of the bearing and down the side case. No tipping to the right needed.

There is 60,300 miles on this double row bearing and it looks perfect. I see no evidence of galling, flat spotting, debris, or contaminants. Going to look at it with a magnifying glass tomorrow.

I may have found a cause for the noise symptom outside of what this bearing sounds like. My idler pulley bearings have a minut looseness with a very slight dry notchy feel.

It is a PITA beyond the video to make a puller for this one piece set up. So I am considering, if it looks good magnified, to install the new seal and replace the idler pulley. The bearing balls look smooth chrome like even, to the naked eye.

Vern- you can just replace the bearings in the idler pulley if you want. It’s pretty straight forward.

Thanks Hugh. I was thinking that but reading SM says otherwise. I will pop them out and go visit a local bearing house.

Be careful with the press, I can't see that pulley being super-strong for side-press pressures...

Hugh have you changed idler bearings? Do they press straight through or have to be pulled out each side ?

I was thinking the same Joe.

Twin Motorcycles has a great writeup with pictures on idler pulley bearing replacement:

https://www.twinmotorcycles.nl/artikelen.asp?cid=7 &aid=292

The bearings are 6203-2RS

Chill the bearings in the freezer and heat the pulley hub -- if they don't drop into place, they will require very little pressure to seat.

Those spiral retaining rings are the same style that's used to hold the valve in on the top of a beer keg. Just in case anybody wanted some useless information...

Good news! Upon further much closer inspection, my big smooth slippery balls are in great shape. I'm feeling good about that.

Tearing it down this far to find good parts is not a mistake in diagnosis here. It is a relief to see the upgraded parts in place. The only way to find out is to get the sprocket off and try to remove the spacer. With the old bearing set up the center spacer will pull right out leaving the seal intact. No way this built in spacer will move.

The source of my ill sounding noise that was so similar to the internet video was my little crusty rusty rough balls! The idler pulley so close to the front pulley had the noise right there.

The grease dried out. Running dry, very little rust. Very little side play. Did not even feel rough until the bearings were out of the pulley.

Well that fixed it ! Nice little ride to town for gas and all is almost well.

Now I need to fix the rear brake light switch and the neutral light isn't working. Time for an oil change and a front tire. It's about time to pump some new brake fluid through it too.

Still love riding this bike!
