I just bought this bike saturday and when i test drove it it started and ran like a top. Now it isnt starting. it cranks and cranks freely and the fuel pump is running. It just seems like it doesn't want to "hit". any ideas?

15,000 miles
yes the kill switch is on

The fuel pump should run, a few seconds, then shut of when pressure builds up. Out of gas...?

Fouled spark plugs are fairly common on the XBs, especially the 03-07s. If it is started a few times without getting all the way up to operating temperature, it is likely to foul the spark plugs. This is common when people are selling the bike, they start it, rev a few times then shut it off, then do the same thing the next day for someone else.

I'd put a fresh pair of plugs in and see how it goes.

New plugs solved it. Previous owner had just replaced them so I wouldn’t have thought it was them already. Now I just need to find some exhaust...

Now that you have the bike running make darn sure that you do not blip the throttle like some do at every stop sign. Just let the bike idle. Blipping the throttle will foul those plugs pretty fast and maybe that is why you needed new plugs so soon after buying your ULY.

Just as important to saving the plugs is to only start the bike to ride it. Let it warm up from start without touching the throttle.

Then also let it fully warm up every time you start it. Beyond that be mindful that it needs to run about ten miles to be fully warmed up, and that doing this will avoid making a moisture milkshake of the primary oil. It needs to be run enough to boil off condensation.

It is tempting to fire it up to hear it now and again, or have buddies show up who want to hear the beast run. From experience cold start enrichment will let you start it three to four times, without riding it to full warm up, before killing the plugs.

I have found that through winter my Uly can set untouched for three months with a fully charged battery and non alcohol premium gas, to fire up on the first revolution. Pretty amazing.

Just like Etenully says, it is important to always ride long enough so that when you turn the bike off that the fan comes on. Chances are if the fan doesn't come on after shutdown then the engine oil is not hot enough to boil off all the condensate. Stuff a sock in the oil cooler or tape it off with some duct tape because in cool weather the oil doesn't need the extra cooling of the oil cooler. Add to that the air hitting and cooling the oil tank where the dip stick resides is also making it difficult for that oil to stay at a good hot operating temperature. Riding in cold weather is probably hard on the ULY if your rides are short. Extend those rides and the ULY will thank you.

Thanks for all the advise and hints. I've been riding it more than i probably should be (fairly potent mix of ice in the shade and tons of sand where the roads get full sun) and I'm loving it.

Now you are going to need to go after any road salt proactively. The muffler can get ugly fast. Wash the bike thoroughly every chance you can until after all signs of winter are gone.

With the exception of the muffler the bike is mostly made out of materials that won't rust. But fasteners will, and the heim joint motormounts can seize up, wire connectors can corrode. Also inside axle tubes and motor mount bolts will need antisieze when removed.

Glad to see you having fun on it!
