So, in the process if being an idiot (and removing the throttle cam), I released the tension on the TB spring and now I cannot get it back on (with tension to close the butterfly) for the life of me. Anyone have ideas or suggestions?

For the record, it's an 08, TB is still in the engine, engine still in the bike/not rotated, all I did was remove the airbox baseplate, I like long walks on the beach, blah blah blah...

It is tricky. You need to get the straight end behind the TB casting first and then put the hook end on the cam and rotate the cam until the cam lines up with the flats on the shaft and slide it on. Start the nut and as you pull it up you have to take a small screw driver and keep the spring from getting between the TB casting and the cam. That last coil likes to get between them and it's a pain but doable, I've done it, along with a little blue language!

Tootal-

Thx. I was trying that and getting nowhere. Being an idiot, I frequently have to do things twice. I will give it another shot when I have some time.

I have small hands, and didn't like the high throttle tension on my '06 Uly. So I disconnected the main throttle body return spring.

Much more comfortable. And the engine vibration caused the twistgrip to consistently return to idle when released.

Rode it like that for 80,000 miles with absolutely no issues.

Doc-

The 06 TB is different in a few ways from the 08/09. Not the least of which is the throttle cam, which I was trying to replace. Anyhoo, without the spring, there was no way the throttle was closing on its own. So I wasted a couple hours dicking with it. Got it done, but kinda regret ever getting into it. Idiot me.

Thanks for all the assistance.

My ears are perked up now. What did you replace the '08-up style throttle cam with? And, most importantly, what are the results?

Hoo boy.

Well, I TRIED to replace the 'progressive' 08 throttle cam with the 07 and earlier style round cam. Reason being is that the earlier style provides a more direct response. I have owned an 06 and 09 Uly, and now an 08 SS, and the throttle response off idle on the newer bikes has always felt soft to me.

The good news is that the older style cam is cheap, available from Lance, and will slide right on. The bad news is that the 'stops' machined onto the older cam are about an inch short (I know, that's what SHE said: ( ), allowing the butterfly to actually rotate PAST fully open and begin to close again, albeit in the other direction.

SO, it's a worthy project if you are willing to weld an inch long bolt or something onto the cam stop, and not afraid of getting that blasted spring back on. For me, it may be easier to do a quick turn throttle mod. Time will tell.

For now, None More Black is running sweet and strong with a race pipe I got from a friend and IDS' NEW (or recently remapped) Race ECM.

For anyone interested, this is the part needed to theoretically turn your refined and gentlemanly 08 and newer XB to a rip snorter like the 07 and earlier bikes.

I remember demo riding an 08 Uly in Sturgis years ago and was really put off by the off idle throttle response and wrote about it here on BadWeb. I remember it feeling like the bike had no get up and go when you'd leave from a stop. Hated it. Thought at the time that I was glad I had the 06 ULY.

I have only rode 08s. I must not know what I am missing.

While I don't recall from the few times I've ridden a pre-'08 XB12, a friend that has an '07 Uly rode my '08 XB12XT and said my bike was slower than his...

I'd LOVE to get the off-idle 'character' back that others allude to on pre-'08 XB12s. Just not sure which route is the best for me...

Pre-08, it was pretty easy to lift the front wheel, even when not trying. The downside was that low speed throttle response was pretty abrupt. This could be part of the reason that changing the primary drive ratio seemed much more popular with 06-07 owners.

You are correct Mark. The 06-07 had really bad throttle response but I think the 08+ ecm cured that yet they put the relaxed cam plate on. After reworking my ecm I got all that jerky slow speed stuff mellowed out yet I can lift the front at will. I need to ride my brothers 09 and see the difference.
