By the math the versus is a pretty good machine if it is half as good as a Uly. Uly is just plain incredible.

The problem I have with a Ulysses replacement is: anything that is equal to, or better than, a Ulysses is going to set you back close to 20 grand.
Not to mention being more maintenance intense.

Any thing less... is, well less.

My comment about the SX was in jest, yes : D.

EG, the stock ECMs are of excellent quality. The Ulysses just suffers from poor product placement. I'm surprised no one has made 15" Deutsche plug extenders to move the ECMs into the storage bay. But then those plugs are quite pricey; it would likely end up a very expensive extension cable.

Has anyone here ridden both a Uly and a KTM 1090 Adventure?

How does the KTM compare?

Someone should start a business selling refurbished and upgraded old Uly's. There'd clearly be a market.

When properly done though, the cost of such a bike would soon grow way beyond what people are willing to pay I reckon.

Man, I wish Buell was still here. Even if air cooled was out of the question, I would have loved the opportunity to get my hands on a new (1190 version of the) Ulysses.

Or a water cooled 1203.

Or a water cooled 1203.

That would be very interesting indeed.

Imagine tuning two cylinders with the same temperature in them. Radiators under the seat. I want an injector in the header for introducing vape juice into the exhaust. Oh, that's just me.

I agree with nearly every sentiment expressed here. My wife will tell you that hardly a ride goes by that I don't tell her over the intercom, usually after blasting through a series of tight corners, "Baby, I love this BIKE!!" I've owned some really nice motorcycles, comfortable ones, fast ones, great handling bikes and pretty bikes. I've never owned a motorcycle that prompted that from me as regularly as it does. Can I have another glass of Koolaid please?

How about a Super Tenere? I picked up a brand new leftover '13 last year for 10k. Tall, comfy ergos, easy to set up suspension, ABS and TC and throttle modes (yeah, I was not a fan at first, at least I didn't get electronic adjustable suspension) and a terrible seat, cured by Seat Concepts. The 'tall' Buell seat is simply the most comfortable seat I've ever had the pleasure to spend 16 hours on.
Bought mine as a replacement for a KLR used primarily for tent camping in the woods. It is probably 100 pounds heavier than the '09 XB12XT, 10 or so more horsepower and the offset crank makes it feel a little v-twinish. Actually better off off road than the KLR (quite a surprise) as long as you remember it's 600 lbs of fun in the sand and mud
It's the first bike I've ridden in a long while that compares even remotely. That said, the Buell has a permanent spot in the garage mahal, so does the Ironhead I built (and rebuilt again and again) and of course the lil Honda Z50.
Every time, EVERY single time I ride the Buell, it reminds me why I wanted it so bad in the first place, and why after a single short test ride, I went to the local dealer and bought the next one being shipped to the dealer... there wasn't one on the floor or in inventory. When the salesman said "I don't know what color it is going to be", I said I didn't care they only come in red or blue. 45,000 miles later I don't regret the decision one bit.
Good luck in the search. Beautiful low mileage Buell XT's are out there, for sale cheap. If I ever get a bigger garage, I will buy a 'spare'.

I've been thinking along similar lines for the day that I also become a "former" Buell owner. There are so many choices on the market these days, and honestly, there are very few choices with the same blend of power, grunt, and efficiency as the Uly.

I'm big on big displacement packed into few pistons - two is ideal. I also don't want anything to do with electronic everything, particularly suspension. Big displacement, decent HP, and arm-stretching torque in a simple, mostly mechanical, low reliance on electronics package is the way I want to go, and the only thing that fits the bill is the new KTM 1290 Super Adventure R.

The Adventure R has the necessary electronics to manage the brutish 160 HP engine, but it has minimal traction control features and NO electronically controlled suspension. Everywhere that it matters for a no frills, no $$$$$$ repair bill adventure, this bike has it. Every other big-cube adventure bike on the market is full of features that pose potential disaster on a serious long-range trip, and for me, one whose budget cannot afford $1,000+ repairs mid-trip but wants the grin factor of big HP, I think the Adventure R may be my next ride.

My brother has a 1290 Super Duke, and that engine is freak'n awesome. If in the 160hp adventure form it has true high milage, long range reliability, the Adventure R may be the ticket.

Hmmm, seems to me that if you "don't want anything to do with electronic" the SA would be a questionable choice.

Just my $0.02...
