Ok..battery has been on trickle charge all winter in the house
Installed on the 2008 ULY today
Hit starter button
Get get three or continuos knocks.. if I keep start button pressed.. down by starter I think.
I have never had an issue after winter hibernation
Any thoughts..I know its a simple issue
Is one of the of the relays stuck..ignition or starter?

Were you using a "trickle charger", or was it a maintenance charger, like Battery Tender, Smart Charger, ... If you had a standard "trickle charger" on, all winter, your battery is probably fried.
You can get your battery load tested at an auto parts store or cycle shop, to verify.

If a relay is corroded, just removing it and reinstalling it can sometimes wipe it clean. Remove both and reinstall. Also a quick check is to swap the starter and ignition relay. I'm not saying that a relay is your problem but my two suggestions are a quick, easy, and free check.

I have seen a faulty neutral switch cause the start relay to drop out as soon as the starter begins to draw current. With your finger on the button it will attempt to pull in again, drop out - and so on,
This is the same sort of 'machine-gun' sound from the starter you will get with a low battery or resistive battery connections but without the other electrics being affected by the voltage drop.
In my case it happened intermittently and one symptom that I related (with the wisdom of hindsight) was that the neutral light was slightly dull when the switch had a higher resistance.
Pulling the clutch in while you try to crank the starter will bypass the neutral switch and will allow the start relay to get full voltage if there is an issue with the neutral switch.
This isn't one of the regular failures you see posted but very quick to to confirm or eliminate.

Turns out my Harley Smart charger was keeping a defective dead battery alive all winter..kinda like life support and pulling the plug..you are dead
I beat the expiry date on the battery by 4 days..Can you believe that..put the new free battery in the ULY and it was like she got hit with those electro paddles to bring back the dead from cardiac arrest..
I love this forum..looks like we have seen it all..but probably not its a ULY...yesterday I had a beer in disgust..now its time for celebration..Happy Spring guys and ride safe..T
