I can hear strange ringing noise that comes from inside primary cover. Here is an example, I hope you can hear it. Is like grasshopper chirping sound:

https://drive.google.com/open?id=0B1WuX8MwMI1cb0JGVm4xWm5Qamc

Usually occurs when revs go down, especially when you lean the bike just a little bit left. I've already made sure it's not chin fairing, side stand or any of the screws around.

So I thought it's something with primary chain or the tensioner. Today I took the cover off to check but there are no apparent signs of wear or damage to the chain nor the tensioner. Also there are no scratches around. It looks all neat and most likely nobody was there before me anyway. I've taken some detailed pics, they are under this link:

https://drive.google.com/open?id=0B1WuX8MwMI1cWS0wVVRlNENOeHc

Any ideas on what causes the ringing? I'll appreciate suggestions.

The only strange thing I've noticed are two drilled 'cones' on stator cover. What are these?

Those dimples are made duting balancing of the rotor. The ringing is likely primary chain tension or clutch related, possibly the throwout bearing in the center.

They are for balance.

Have you check for a broken muffler clamo, loose etc?5

After lostening to the video, I would double check everything to make sure it isn't a nut or bolt loose on the bike rattling around rather than being primary related. Last time I diagnosed a similar ring, it turned out the owner didn't account for the noise from the added gremlin bell.

Those drilled cones are for balancing the stator rotor.

Gremlin bell? It looks like my Uly just got one for free ; ) Thanks, I'll double check everything. Maybe just a fresh oil will help? Or re-setting the chain tension, I don't know really... We'll see once I put it back together.

By the way, what do you guys set the chain freeplay to, 3/8" or more? When I checked mine a few days ago it had almost ideal 3/8 inch in every position.

OK, recognizing that I'm listening to a recording: Check for exhaust leaks. Main joint at the muffler, also at the ports. A very small leak will be high pitched. At least for a while.

Haven't listened to the video yet, but there are a couple of places this could come from.

If it's a light gong type sounds, and you can make it go away by just barely loading the clutch (not enough to move, but enough to drop idle speed), then it is a lose stator nut. The torque spec in the old manual is too low.

The other place could be the 5th gear drive assembly, where the shaft rides inside a pair of roller cage bearings inside the thing the secondary (belt) drive pulley front sprocket bolts onto. You really don't want it to be that. You might be able to diagnose that by taking off the belt, putting the bike in neutral, and turning the output sprocket by hand. If it's crunchy / catchy, that's bad. And by bad, I mean "split the cases" bad on the XB. : (

Got to listen to the video, doesn't sound like loose stator nut. Is it louder on the belt drive side of the engine?

I set mine as close to 3/8" (cold) as I can get it. Last time I set it, I had it right on the money. However, I noticed when the weather was hot and the engine was hot, I'd have difficulty finding neutral. I loosened the adjustment screw about one-quarter turn and that fixed it.

Late Badwebber Lafayette was a big proponent of "looser is better" on the primary adjustment, but I notice a lot more vibration with the chain set at 1/2".

I started setting the chain at 1/4" when hot. I figure you do most of your riding when hot so why not adjust it then. It's more accurate technically but since there is some plus or minus tolerance it may not have to be that exact, I'm just an anal bastard!

On my old Cyclone I had a jiggling or metallic noise coming from the primary area. It turned out to be the baffling inside my V&H muffler rusted apart and started rattling around. Especially on deceleration

Does the noise you hear change between cold startup and operating temperature?
Can it be heard at any other time when riding?

Reepicheep - It's definitely louder on the left side.

Teeps - Yes, the ringing doesn't really occur when engine is cold. When hot, it does occur both while riding or reving. More often when the bike is leaned just a little left. The noise comes from the front side of the primary rather than rear (provided it comes from the primary).

That's good news. Right side is bad.

Noise, like gold, is where you find them... that said:
I wonder if the starter pinion gear is touching the driven gear when it shouldn't?

Do you think it could be something in the muffler?
I brought my 2008 in under warranty with a scary bottom end clunk. I was positive it was a bearing.
They found the muffler had a defect inside that was making the deathrumble.
They didn't let me open it up but they said something was loose in there.

Yeah, I'm beginning to think it's something external. If I don't find anything by the weekend I'm going to put it back together.

Teeps, that's a good question. Do you suggest that the return spring doesn't work as it should when hot? Maybe. But I have no way of checking with open cover, have I :/

Check the clutch basket bearing, especially if the primary oil was allowed to capture moisture.

The bearing in mine was rusted and squealing.

Do you think it could be something in the muffler?

There's supposed to be an anti-rattle spring on the interactive muffler valve. You should be able to see it where the cable connects to the valve on top of the muffler. If that's missing, the valve could be rattling inside the muffler. See pic below:

That lean a little to the left is an interesting observation as noise appears when slowing motor down. these cranks don't have the heavier timkens on drive side to control thrust. other means to control thrust? has anyone noted a noise if or when their stator screws have backed out as some have described or found?

Issue solved (temporarily?). I suspected to find something obvious and apparent under the cover but I don't feel like removing clutch, starter or parts of transmission on a wild goose chase. Decided to put it back together before Christmas. Poured a quart of fresh oil, set the chain a bit looser. I can't hear the ringing anymore, hopefully it won't come back. Thanks for all the comments anyway, actually I'm more confident now that nothing serious is going on.
