Rfp52,
I promise to ride it, A LOT , and you can still own it. I will keep it garaged, tired, and insured for you. How many miles would you like on it the first year? 20,000+ ?

My wife and I test rode a new waterboxer GSA last year since the dealer didn't have the new RT available. Put about 40 miles on it. We were impressed, and not.

The electronic suspension was nice in that "You will ride this way" Teutonic fashion, and I loved the engine and drivetrain though it felt more like a multi than a big twin to me.

However, compared with the fully trip-loaded Uly we left in their parking lot, it handled wonky, the seat was unfriendly to her backside as well as the muffler heat, the wind protection and buffeting was worse than the stock Uly shield, and it just felt sort of disconnected from me. Surprised me, for being one of the most popular (and $$$) bikes in the world. Maybe the more standard GS would have felt more familiar, dunno.

Getting back on the X was permagrin. Due to circumstances, we're not riding much any more, so a new tourer is pretty much out. And I've thought of getting rid of the Buell myself and restoring the 100S. But I know I'd hate myself afterward.

Having put something over 80,000 miles on (two) '06 Ulys (some of you here remember my joys and travails, like the Uly stranding me four times in a row), and having put 66,000 miles on a '13 BMW GSw (waterboxer), now having only put 7,500 miles on a '16 GSAw (low mileage due to another broken arm; you don't wanna see my X-rays)...I'll throw my $0.02 in here.

I test-rode two GS's at our local dealer some years ago, an '08 and a '10, and each time was MOST happy to get back on my '06 Uly. Wasn't impressed with the GS at all.

Then I test-rode the '13 GSw...I felt it was a completely different beast. Bought one the next day and rode the daylights out of it (66,000 miles in less than three years). Not ONE problem (okay, had to replace a fork seal), and I LOVED everything about the bike. Er---like the Uly---I wish it weren't as tall (I'm 5-8). I looked forward to turning 100,000 miles (wouldn't take that long).

But then...dealer had a low-suspension '16 GSA on the floor in July (in my preferred color, w/$3K discount), and I couldn't resist (IIRC Erik never made a low-suspension Uly ; ) )

I've noticed NONE of the issues that Xbimmer mentioned. A little more "deliberate" handling than the GSw (and the Uly, of course...nothing handles like a Uly). Once again, I LOVE the bike. Perfect for this stage of my life (turn 70 next year).

I'm fortunate in having an excellent BMW dealer (as I had with the Buell dealer); they let me do my own work and listen to me when I talk (the BMW GM used to be the H-D GM; known him for years).

No, no bike ever created is as fun to ride as the Uly, but I'm betting BMW will be in business for a while. And I've seen a lotta pretty country on the BMW(s). And never been stranded.

Hope this is not hijacking the thread, but when people start discussing GSW's here, I feel I have some credibility. Just like with the Uly.

P.S. Back on the bike yesterday for the first time since surgery October 10, and now a storm is coming in. Just my luck.

IIRC Erik never made a low-suspension Uly

Actually, he did:

The 2008-up XB12XT. IIRC, it sits about an inch lower than the standard Uly. I converted my bike earlier this year; I bought a rear shock and kickstand from guy on FB, got a front fender on ebay, and swapped forks with a Badwebber. I'm also about 5'8" (with a 30" inseam which is the more critical dimension); for the riding I do, it's a better setup.

Doc, I'm glad to hear you've healed up AGAIN! Also I'm sure that nobody minds if you put your 2 cents in on any subject. If you've got anything it's CRED! Especially on these pages! Good to hear from you and don't be a stranger!

Well, if all I do is rant, you won't miss me very long.

Sorry about all that, but I still take bikes seriously. I've always considered Erik (a fellow mechanical engineer) as a genius designer, and rest assured if he ever brings out another ADV-style bike, I'll take a long look.

Merry Christmas and happy Holiday season to all. 2016 was a rough year for many people, including myself.

Cheers,

Nothing more entertaining than a Dr_greg rant. But, I'm entertained by theology books too. =]
