? My 06 with 29 K on it has always done the pinging when hot out, usually around 4K goes away as the revs climb. I was going to retard the timing but was told by a mechanic I respect not to do it. But am I damaging the motor? It does go away when I wear ear plugs,

You could always use ECM spy to retard the timing at lower RPMs, or retard the timing cup and advance the timing in higher RPMs, if that's easier.

On my '06 I retarded the timing two degrees. No help. I was having a pinging and an over heat problem, when it got hot it would ping. It next went into spark skip.....frequently.

Pinging comes from either being too hot(detonating),low octane fuel, or firing too early. As much as the engine is a high performance engine, timing is quite advanced. On a Uly it needs higher octane, less timing, or more cooling to fix the ping problem.

If you don't have it the comfort kit helps a lot with cooling.

Through a couple of seasons of trying everything to dissipate excess heat during hot summer months riding, I got pissed and hotwired my cooling fan to run all of the time on my way home from 2010 Homecoming.

It worked great. It seemed the fan logic was not turning the fan on early enough or long enough. I now have it wired to a lighted toggle switch. I turn it on five minutes into warming it up and leave it on for the whole time I am riding. It reminds me to turn it off when I take my helmet off when hearing it on.

My over heat problem went away and my pinging no longer happens at all. I do have a CEL that stays on steady, but I have found that it will begin to flash if a problem shows up. The oil pressure is a separate light so I do not worry about the light being on. There is an electrical fix to turn the light off when it indicates the fan is "not right", but my bike works really well with the fan manually switched on the way it is.....for me red light means it is working!

You might be lugging the motor at too low RPM's. Try running up the rev's a little higher before shifting. Also, I believe that it's true that if you hear pinging, it is not good for your motor, and over an extended period it can cause damage.

What's you AFV? If it's high, you may have an intake seal leak, which will cause a lean condition, which will cause pinging.

No it is NOT good for the motor and in bad cases it can burn a hole in the piston crown.

If I still had my 06 bike I would do something like Etennuly has done. The problem is because it is a air cooled engine and the rear head is stuffed in the frame and can not get any decent cooling from air flow even with the bike moving. This is what the later fan logic does as the fan will stay on at about 18 mph plus and not controlled from oil temp unless needed and THAT is the logic bit of the system.

Air cooled engines can not cool as fast as water cooled ones. That is why the pots are normally well exposed to the air around them. The fan on this bike is controlled via the engine temp sensor which is for the oil. By the time the oil temp hits the top line for the fan to come on the metal of the engine is very hot and the hotter the ambient temp the harder it will be to cool the engine.

Do not quote me on this as I can not remember all the numbers but. A good running temp is about 190 C and a top line of 220 C if it is working hard IE Thrashing it. The fan will come on at about 230 C. I would be inclined to drop the "FAN ON" limit to preempt the over heating which is, in effect, what the later fan logic does but uses the bikes speed to control the fan. Maybe something like 200 C but this would take some experimenting to get right, due to the heat soak to the engine metal, but as long as the engine still runs to a good temp I see no reason why this would not work.

I do have the comfort kit which helped some, and always put in high octane. I don't have a PC lap top so ECM spy is a no go. The fan switch sounds like a good idea.

I am not saying that people can not tell what this "pinging" is IE Fuel or other fault but if you are not sure then I would take it to a good mechanic. Any decent one would know it straight away even if not the cause of it. You certainly need to have the timing checked as correct as per spec. Did you buy the bike new?

On thing you could try is to take off the air box cover, air box and the base plate to expose the cylinder heads then go for a ride. The pinging is in the cylinders and if that is what it is then you will very clearly hear it then. This sort of thing also badly effects performance. Try riding the bike up a long gentle gradient at say 30 mph and changing from 2 to 3, 3 to 4 and then 5th. If it just "bogs down" then there is nothing wrong but if it "knocks" then thats a problem IE Timing, fuel or other fault. Or at least these things are what I would try first as easy and free to do.

I'll give it a try, just been to busy to check it out. Other then the slight pinging the bike runs great.

I had this same problem on my Uly. Finally I gave up and pulled the timing cover off and retarded the timing one notch. So far so good.

To be clear I checked my static timing before doing this and it was spot on.
