Spent the past week getting the uly ready to be inspected. The last thing on the list was having a new Pirelli front tire mounted. Thought I'd kill two birds with one stone and have the dealer mount the tire and do the inspection at the same time. (I have never had good luck with this dealer's service department). They did what I half-expected them to do: told me that they wouldn't pass the inspection on the bike because the front bearings were "gritty". I've had good luck nursing the bearing along by popping the covers and regreasing them...told them to just put it back together and not do the inspection then. They still charged me $60 just for mounting the tire. The total BS thing about this is that for just the inspection they would never have inspected the bearings in the first place. Scumbags! And for the record, the bearings are still servicable. There is one slightly sticky spot when they are rotated by hand.

I guess it's off to the Yamaha shop to get my inspection sticker now.

Any sticky spot and I would replace them. Once a bearing starts to fail it's like a snow ball effect. Wear is not linear! It's just not worth the $ to skimp on something that could injure you if there is a total failure.
Sort of like tires, you always buy good ones as it's cheap insurance!

South Carolina: Other freedoms are also available.

Rob is already having a bad day in Pennsylvania. No need to rub it in.

The weather certainly isn't helping matters. Cannot get in a nice therapeutic ride with all the daily monsoons. :^(

I'm not overly concerned about a bearing "total failure" and even if they do need replaced, letting a dealership do the work that charges $60 to mount a tire, is not an option.

I take my wheels to a Yamaha/Honda shop 45 minutes away. The owner has always been above board with me. Never scratched my rims either.

I tried to have the rear tire swapped at a local Susuki dealer last year and they couldn't do anything with the rim. It was too wide for their jig. LMAO...and the kid who removed the rear sprocket used the wrong size star bit and burred up the screw heads.

Buells are by necessity an owner serviced machine but to do that ya got's ta have da proper garage space, tools, and time...and a bit of mechanical inclination don't hurt.

The whole plus spending the last week working on the bike is that it now runs like a uly is suppose to: new plugs (properly gapped), plug wire connections dialectric greased, air cleaner degummed, breather reroute not spewing crap into the air-box, new front and rear brake pads, and a semi-new Michelin-PR2 on the back and a new Pirelli Rossi on the front... and I finally got rid of that crappy touring windscreen and put the original sport screen back on it. With the shorter screen it feels much more like a sport-bike, but I get a hellova lot wetter in the rain. :^P

Only reason it all came together now is that my sister went on vacation and I appropriated her husbands garage while they were gone. Was able to work at my leisure, drink the brother in law's beer, and listen to his music while working on the thing. ;^)

Glad it is running well Tempest66. This bike does not need a mechanical genius to work on it only a competent one. You seem to be ok on it so why take it to a dealer and get burnt again. If you want others to do work for you then find an good independent shop/ guy to do it. Less money, better service and a better customer attitude.

"And for the record, the bearings are still serviceable". Sorry Rob you are totally wrong. Any wear to the bearing, as in this case, is dangerous and could seize/ collapse at any moment. Bad enough on the rear but on the front it is suicidal. That is WHY the dealer inspection would not pass the bike safe and rightly so. I would get them replaced ASAP. In fact I would NOT rid the bike myself until they were done. It is your bike though.

You DO NOT need to remove anything on the rear wheel to replace a tire so no idea what was going on there.

If you're not happy with the dealer that's one thing but ignoring the bearings? If you can't do that job in your brother in laws garage then take the wheel to an independent shop. We're not harping on this to be jerks, we are only concerned for your well being. I've been working for 35 years on equipment and have changed out a multitude of bearings. In fact, some of the bearings I receive that are new I won't use. Quality control has seemed to have gone out the window these days. So check your new bearings before you put them in. If you feel anything while turning them I wouldn't use them.

Bearings out of the wheel will always feel better than they were in place. I just replaced my fronts. In place, there was some very, very, minor, but distinct, notchiness. Out of the wheel, no trace of any issue at all.

I can agree with Tootal , always check the bearings before leaving the parts counter. I've caught it in both mc and auto worlds, premature failure averted.
Change those fronts, you control the situation and can do them in comfort of your free beer garage. Dont let them decide for you, it'll cost you more most likely.

i have had nothing but a bad time from that dealer since i bought my Buell...which is total bullshit seeing as how they were really into Buells at one time...in fact...they had 8 race bikes ...a trailer a new truck to pull it all including 2 paid riders and techs ...and now they practically refuse to touch one...and will sit there and talk shit on Buells as long as you're willing to listen.
I have a lift and most tools you need...and i'm not far from you. hit me up if you need to fix anything.

Don't feel bad. . . . . I am sitting in a Chevrolet dealer with a brand new truck.

I bumper the mirror and bugged up the adjustment linkage.

I've been here 3 times . . . At least a hour each time . . As experts evaluated the situation.

The new mirror was order and they'd determined that they cou.d transfer the white cap.

I've been here for a couple hours as experts pout over the truck. A service guy just emerged to ask "do you have any idea how expensive this is going to be . . We have to not only replace the entire drivers side mirror but transfer the colors cap"

I can't wait to see how this plays out.

I need to get out of here . . Pick up my personal vehicle and get to a another dealer for $1,000 in rotors, pads and all new Bilstine struts and shocks.

Grrrrrrr . . . Making the $5,000 central a/c replacement, scheduled for tomorrow morning, look like kids play.

When it rains.

My tire changing choice was made for me as my hurdlydurly dealer stopped carrying tires that would fit any Buell. They don't install tires bought elsewhere "due to insurance reasons"
I bought one of those cycle hill rigs and get my tires delivered to my door from amazon : )

It's paid for itself already.
