Anyone ever attempted a long two up trip on the Ulysses? I gave my girl the choice for our vacation...the beach...or the Adirondack mountains for a bike ride....She chose the mountains ...can you say " Keeper"??? So...i'm thinking i can weld up a rack to put on top of the top box to hold my tent and air mattress...and... i was thinking maybe we could strap sleeping bags to the side cases... just not sure how its all going to come together...looking for any help/insights by anyone that might have attempted a similar adventure? Thanks in advance for any replies

Also...this will be my second time in the Adirondacks in two weeks as i'm going the week before with my Canadian riding buddies...so i could probably take my tent and stuff on the first trip...and leave it at the campground for a week until i return with my girl...and then possibly mail the tent and air mattress back home before we leave?

Man, that's a tough one.

Leaving your bulky stuff or shipping it to the camp ground is a real good idea.

Be REALLY careful with hanging a bunch of stuff off of the bike outside of the luggage. A friend of mine had a scary near-miss a few years back when he packed just a jacket in a bungee net on the back of his RC-51. After navigating ~100 miles of serious twisties (many with adjacent steep drop offs) the jacket slipped out and got caught in his back wheel as he was pulling into the city limits of Greenville, SC. The wheel locked at 50 MPH and he slid until the tire blew. If that had happened an hour earlier, he probably wouldn't be here today.

Or, you could always tow one of these:

I tied the sleeping pads between the handles on the side panniers and the grab handles on the rear seat.(made super nice armrests for the GF).
Unpacked the tent and laid it in the bottom of the top box.(not being a round tube shape it fit well and took up little storage space, also I put the tent poles in the sleeping pad cases/bags)
used super small lightweight sleeping bags(summer weight)
minimal extras, literally T's and underwear left plenty of room for the other necessities.
We only did a weekend and of course brought no food with us(purchased once there)

Gotta be careful, as with a passenger and all that stuff your really running into an overload condition.

I've taken extended trips 2-up, and I've camped 1-up with the Uly, but never both. I'm with Hughlysses, get the bulky stuff up there early, and mail it home.
BTW your girl = keeper!

The idea of leaving the big stuff at the campground is a good one.
My Dad and his buddies made friends with a caretaker and ended up with a seasonal storage closet, for years.

2 Spuds, got gas and lunch at the same spot on our way to Hyder in 2013. Rode 2 up for 11 nights but we stayed in motels.

Rayycc1, Uly really handled well fully loaded with the suspension settings just as the book suggests. We did not carry camping gear but all 3 bags were full. I would agree with the others that if you can get your camping gear there another way do it! Some of the new tech fabric is super nice, you can bring one extra t shirt, shorts, socks etc. and just wash them and ring them out, they be dry in a short time and will save valuable space and weight. Also, don't overload that top box. We had ours a bit heavy one day and when hitting the throttle heavy for passing the front end got lighter than I like.

You can leave the stuff at the campground during your first trip, but you still have to get it back home 2-up the second time around. A better route might be to rent the camping gear at a local outfit or nearby REI or similar if they have any decent sized towns nearby.

with me being me, I packed for my wife on a weekend trip. she asked what did she need and I told her I had already packed. just get on and lets go. we did. It was only a weekend with a hotel stay. that night she asked where her stuff was. I dug around in tour pack and got out her toothbrush and a pair of panties. What a weekend that was. But ever since she never let me pack for her. I still laugh about that but I would be the only one laughing. worked for me.

My friends have raced the TRANSPAC (CA to HI) and some would vacuum bag and pack all cotton clothes. When they changed clothes they tossed the dirty ones overboard. They would arrive In HI with little to wear. The wife/GF would fly over and meet them with a suitcase of real clothes. Maybe there is something that can be learned from this.

Tooth brush, cash, credit card, pants/ t-shirts and (use motel/ hotels) the bike. Anything else is just "dead weight" you have to deal with.

First let me say my wife would never camp outside a motel or at least a 30' RV. Given that, for a three night motel stay in the Smokies, I gave her the right side bag, I used the left side bag, and the top bag was for the trip and the bike's needs. Tools, maps, clear visors, cleaning spray, paper towels, rain gear and such.

She had a hell of a time packing clothes around her hair dryer/curling iron stuff. It was quite funny watching her pack and unpack until she had stuffed that side bag with nearly forty pounds of stuff. Then that made me have to re-arrange my stuff and the bike's stuff to balance the left side to be also way over weight.

I was amazed that when we got home she had actually used all of her stuff. I still had not unpacked half of mine. But it was one of the most fun trips we had ever done.

I have done many four or five day tent camping trips solo. The Uly is a great machine for this stuff.
