Recently my starter switch is intermittently working. If the bike does not respond I have to disengage clutch and try the starter switch again. Any ideas?

Sounds like a similar issue to mine, though my whole dash would quit and not come on. I explained my situation in better detail to Al at American Sport Bike and he is fairly certain the electrical end of the keyswitch is the issue, which is a replaceable piece. I'll have mine in on Monday so I'll keep you informed on it.

It could be your neutral switch, but if it is, your neutral light would not be lit.

Sounds like a grounding issue.

Next time turn the handlebars and try the button again.

Also consider wires broken at the steering neck.

It is pretty easy to confirm a neutral switch circuit issue (even if the light is working). Next time the problem occurs, keep the starter button depressed and squeeze the clutch lever. If the starter triggers as the clutch is squeezed, the neutral circuit is the problem. Fixing it is not always so straightforward though.

Got mine running again today, turns out it was NOT the switch at the end of the key tumbler. MY issue was that the positive terminal on my new battery did not have enough spacers, so it bottomed out but the cable could still move. I put a washer in there and cranked it down and all is well now.

The problem happened again, I depressed the clutch lever and it did not make a difference.

I kept tapping the start switch and it fired up.

Try pressing the starter switch only partially. I've come across a few instances, on other brand machines, where the starter button breaks contact at full press but maintains contact just short of pressing to the end of travel.

Don't overlook the starter relay, either.

In my experience, those little relays fail intermittently before they completely sh** the bed. Also, just because a relay clicks doesn't always mean that it is functional.

If you do decide to replace a relay, it is worth noting that they are half the cost at Harley-Davidson than an auto parts store.

My passing light switch didn't work so I took it apart to see if it could be replaced. When I got to the contact points a tiny spider had woven a tiny web which wouldn't allow contact. I evicted him and the light worked. I've a feeling the starter button is just a set of points also. Worth looking at.
