I wondered what the collective advice is on air filters for an 09 Uly. It is completely stock, ie air filter, exhaust and ECM. If I went to a K&N filter but left everything else stock would there be any issue? I would think there would be no problem as the amount of air processed through the engine would be throttled by the stock exhaust and the ECM should be able to take care of any small changes. I would do this because the K&N can easily be cleaned and reused and is about the same price as the stock unit. |

Yo! barry, No issues with running a K&N air filter - that I know of, except that in tests, the K&N appears to result in higher amounts of larger-sized particulates (DUST) getting into your combustion chamber. From there, the particulates get into your oil and result in greater overall engine wear. My view is that K&N filters are a costly and messy gimmick (buying and applying that nasty filter oil) that contaminate motor oil and reduce engine longevity for absolutely no benefit. Perhaps for older type motors where air supply was a real issue, but not for anything modern. The XB already does a great job of dirtying up the oil. I would prioritize cleaner oil with less dust and particulates. Anyway, The stock filter is quite up to the task. There is plenty of surface are on that filter and adequate air supply is NOT among the chief limitations of the later - XB's architecture. Several among us wash the stock filters out gently in warm water and use them for 2-3 cycles. My two cents worth. DB (Message edited by Desert_bird on June 06, 2015) |

Im running a uni filter in my 07. The foam approach was what my husky had and wifes kdx enduro. Got a lot of miles out of those motors in a dirty environment. Yeah, the oiling after cleaning is a hassle but it seemed to work good. The briggs n stratton people have oil foamed air cleaners in their equipment and that stuff can run for years with regular maintenance. The foam doesnt last forever so you have to determine how long your going to run one of those filters. Doesnt rank as high as wheel bearings or belts on failures tho. |

I have a K&N, and you'll have no issue running it with stock settings which is what I did for a long time before my stock ECM stopped working. |
