Talking with Dan, another option we came up with is that if you send your ECM with your heads, we can plug it into my bike and program it here, so it will be plug and play when you get your stuff back ('06-'07 only).

BTW race map and 33 miles later so far so good. I did seem to have a small oil leak from a fitting on the oil pump but I tightened it up so we'll see. Not sure if it was related unless I bumped it when moving the cam cover.

Phelan,
Nice work. Have you plans to dyno after a good break-in period?

You bet he does.
That's what started all this. Besides Ross' inability to "leave anything as it is".

When he got the Uly, we dyno'd it and it only pulled 76HP.
My old XB9 made 78...

He's hoping(very likely) to top the 90 HP my Uly made a couple of years ago.

Zac is right on all accounts ; ). Between fixing the backwards injectors, hefty oil buildup in the port, constricting exhaust gaskets, questionable head gasket seal from destroyed dowel pin, and the upgrades I've done, it should be a very stout bike once it's tuned in : ).

By the way, seeing that you guys are both from Colorado, am I going to see you two at the Buell get together on July 11 weekend. My wife and I will be showing up at the Jade Hotel on the 10th. I'm riding the 06' Uly and she'll be on her 2007' Sportster.

Seeing as Zac and I work for the host of the gathering, I'd say it's a safe bet we'll be there ; ).

I look forward to meeting you both and more.

There will be some rides but remember -
This will be a summer weekend and the mountains are full of tourists and cops Fri-Sun.
However, a ride on a Wednesday or Thursday can be a hoot.

Moral here, come back and ride during the week.

Just an update, 250 miles in since the rebuild and no hiccups, bike runs great. Another couple hundred and then we can throw it on the dyno and tune it : D.

Taken from Wikipedia

Buell XBRR
Buell also produced a limited series of 50 XBRR (1,339 cc or 81.7 cu in, 150 hp or 110 kW) racing-only machines for and privateer racing teams.[32] The XBRR frame was a XB1/XB2 hybrid, the suspension came from Swedish manufacturer Öhlins, and the wheels were made of magnesium. It was the first model using the ZTL2 eight-piston caliper by Nissin.[33]

After 8 years and 4 bikes, I finally have a 100 RWHP air cooled lump! We put 8 miles on the dyno, with no tuning changes, only playing with the heat soak a little bit. The bike stopped at exactly 70,000 miles when I pulled it off the dyno : ). Best run was 100.5 RWHP and 82.4 FT/LBS. I'll post pics of the graph tonight. Not bad for a stock muffler : ). Bike is ridiculously smooth too.

BTW the mapping could use a little tweaking but we'll leave it as is for now. It cruises at 14:1 AFR but runs a solid 12:1 at WOT. The higher cruising AFR is no doubt from tying the exhaust valve open. I may put the cable back in to reattach the valve, but I'll likely have to change the ECM to run it again as the Race ECM ignores the valve since the race muffler doesn't have one. Also the RPMs cut at 6700, this build is capable 7200-7500 if I can change the limiter with ECMspy. Once I get a Race Muffler or even better, a Micron full system, should be 105-110 RWHP.

very impressive! I wonder what kind of mileage it gets? You can change the limiters with ECMspy.

VERY good mileage actually, between 45 and 50 MPG. Less if I go through the mountains : D

Altitude is a wonderful thing for mileage, not so good for power! Ahhhh, Poudre Canyon and it's tributary's are a wonderful place to play! What is that, stove pipe road? Something like that.

If you reverse your HP and Torque numbers, that's pretty much what my Harley does!!

I think we have some more dynos coming up next weekend, and Zach loaned me an ECMspy cable, so I'm going to play with it a bit, raise my rev limiter, and see if I can add a little more fuel at cruising cadence, and re-dyno the bike soon. I should be able to get a few more HP with a higher limiter.

The AFR is only really practically measured using a lambda sensor. In days of old, "plug chops" could be performed, however due to the inaccuracy of this method and the location of the plugs on Buell XBs and the later Helicon engines, this is discouraged. Target AFRs for tuning goals. This is from ECM-SPYs tuning guide http://www.ecmspy.com/tgv2/guide2.shtml.

I hooked the actuator back up and reset the TPS. Without dynoing it again yet, it's hard to tell, but the race map doesn't feel nearly as much of a perfect fit as with the valve tied open, probably because the race map is for the race muffler, which doesn't have the valve. So once I get some dyno time on it to get a better idea of what it's doing, I'll play with the map to fine tune it to use with the valve active. Tuning with the active valve will give me a lot more midrange torque boost than I could ever see in power gains up top with a custom exhaust, so I will probably stick with the stock exhaust as it's pretty damn good. I will still raise the rev limiter though before my next dyno session, so I can see what the power peaks at, as up top is not different than before.

I am following this thread like a lost puppy. My 09 has close to 70k and this project has me desperately wanting to make love to a schoolboy(Dumb and Dumber, anyone?!?!?!). Excited, is what I mean. Any updates?

I assume all the parts used in this build apply to the 08 and up bikes?

I definitely need to play with the mapping some more to fit with using the actuator. I haven't changed it yet; wanted to put a few miles on it and compare the mapping with the mapping I saved before, to see if it changed anything. I know the bike runs terribly rich at under 1500 rpm and between 3100 and 5050, the RPMs which the valve is closed. I'll probably only adjust the fueling from the race map in those spots. Tempting just to tie the valve back open, as the race map was a perfect fit in that case. The bike still runs awesome. All the NRHS parts will fit '08--'10 XBs, but my maps will not. You will have to source a race ECM and/or tuning software like Dobeck for the '08-up bikes. If you send in your heads to us for headwork, send in the manifold too. The '07-up manifolds may be better (I'll have to check the ones we have here), but the '06 manifolds are definitely quite small ID. We can open them up when we texture them and port match them to the heads and it makes a significant difference.

Big Ugly is going bigger! I just ordered new springs, lifters, shorter pushrods, and 1.900" intake valves. Gonna go bigger in the intakes and deck the heads a bit more, since my compression isn't as high as I'd like. Will eventually dyno with both stock and race muffler. It may cost some bottom end, but I'm going to tie the valve open again for ease in tuning. The race map just isn't a great fit for the stock muffler, at least not with the other mods I have.
