Hi, my 08 Uly has the yellow light (check engine) that stays on until the bike is ready to start. Now its staying on all the time. Any ideas?

Do I just need to find someone with a computer who can check codes?

Thanks in advance for any help!

This thread tells you how to read the code without a computer:

The light normally comes on when you first turn the key and kill switch to on, but it will shut off in a few seconds.

Being that yours is staying on, you have an issue. You don't need a computer to check the codes, but the computer will tell you in plain English what is going wrong.

Use a metal clip or something to short the #1 and #2 pins to each other, then turn the key to the on position. The check engine light will flash three times rapidly, pause two seconds, then flash (X) number of times for the first digit, pause two seconds again, then flash (Y) number of times for the second digit, then pause two seconds and flash three times rapidly again. It will repeat over and over again. It may display more than one code in succession. If so, it will pause two seconds between flashing each digit for each code.

ie: three flashes - 2 sec. pause - (X) - 2 sec. pause - (Y) - 2 sec. pause - (A) - 2 sec. pause - (B) 2 sec. pause - three flashes

...and so on. The codes are preceded and succeeded by three rapid flashes. If, when you turn the key to the on position, all you get are rapid flashes, there is no trouble code.

Did they do a bike with the CEL as yellow?

Yes, all 08+ XB bikes.

Ah I see the problem. For some reason my 10 bike has an early set of clocks that have a rev limit line at 6k. They must have changed the CEL light color on the latter clocks.

It's also worth mentioning that probably the most common culprit for a check engine light is the exhaust servo. Many of these fail due to plastic gears used in the earlier units.

If you get the code for that, it's easy to confirm. First remove the outer airbox. Flip the kill switch to off, turn the ignition switch on, rotate the throttle to wide open and hold, then flip the kill switch on while watching the servo. (Do not start the bike.) The servo should cycle to full open and back. If it only opens part-way, if it hesitates while moving, or if it doesn't open at all, you've got a bad servo. You can get the latest replacement with metal gears from American Sport Bike.

Thanks for all this great info guys! Really appreciated, I'll hopefully get to the cause of this quickly.

I should mention that this happened right after I put in my new battery, which was installed after a long bout of trying to get the last junker to work with a trickle charger and not having much success with that. Thanks

Ferrisanyoneseenferris - I should mention that this happened right after I put in my new battery

Exact same thing happened to me recently when I removed and reinstalled the battery after reconditioning it. Bike turned over much better but what the heck was up with the illuminated Vtwin light?! Fortunately, it stayed off the next time I started the bike after a 16 mile commute and sitting all day. I put it down to an ecm "reset" issue of some sort.

Funny you mention ecm reset as after 5 month motor roll, my ecm seemed to not know anything. After broke front plug wire replacement, both cylinders firing, then it still took tps reset several times, idle reset a couple times, and bout 30 mile ride with idle reset. All fell into place then. It acted like a brand new bike with no miles on it.

This process does not work on my 08 XT with the 09 ECU firmware. shorting pins 1 and 2 (vertical on the right side with the plug lock at 12oclock) does absolutely nothing. The lights come on, and the oil and neutral light come on, but no flashes after 8, 10, or 15 seconds.

Make sure the kill switch is not in the kill position
