I plan on replacing my fuel filter. While the fuel pump ia out I want to replace the fuel strainer also. I've read old posts on here that the part no. For the fuel strainer is not correct. Is there a cross referenced fuel strainer available or can I clean the old one with carb cleaner?

I read that new fuel pumps come with the correct strainer however I don't want to spend the money on a new fuel pump when the current one works fine.

Does the bike need to be very low on gas when changing the fuel filter or can it be done while gas is full?

I think both the strainer as well as the filter are attached to the plate at the bottom of the tank.
In other words, the tank must be empty.

The fuel "filter" on the Buell should be good for the life of the fuel pump.
Or until the filter clogs to the point that fuel pressure drops...

When I removed my pump, to check internal wires, I was able to dislodge some small bits of debris by flexing and tapping on the dry screen (strainer). As long as you don't get some bad (dirty) gas, the screen and filter should be good indefinitely.

You need the tank to be real empty before removing the pump. Any gas left in the tank will be coming out with the pump.

For as inexpensive as the filter and screen are, unless you have a real low miles bike, I would change them.

Get two new fuel pump base O rings. The hole going back in is machined tight so lube them with something like vasoline.

If you unbolt the rear shock at the bottom the bike will jack up to where the swing arm will droop enough to clear the pump, without removing the swing arm.

Al at American Sport Bike can send it all to your door step. That is where I got mine.

They are in the sponsor page.

Was it the same strainer as the one you took off?

If I don't remember for sure. I think it was a flat rectangular tea bag looking affair. I did mine in June of '09. Time really is getting by!
