Since this has been coming up with a few of the 08 and 09 bikes I decided to try to remove mine on the 09 and inspect and clean it. I's pretty easy and doesn't take much time. I'm assuming everyone already knows how to remove the air box cover, air box, and air box base. Don't forget to disconnect your air temp sensor before removing the air box base. After all this is removed look straight down on the right hand side of the throttle body just below the rubber velocity stack and you will see a four wire connector connected to the IAC (Idle Air Control) motor.
IAC connector
Disconnect this.

IAC disconnected

Now remove the two 3mm allen bolts that hold the motor into the housing. They are probably going to be a bit stiff because they have that white thread locker that Buell liked to use. Now you can pull the IAC motor straight up and out of it's housing.

My motor and housing had a lot of oily crap on it after 18.000 miles.
IAC dirty housing

I cleaned the housing using Q tips saturated with carb cleaner

and wiping it out until clean.
Finishing off with clean dry Q tips.

I cleaned the metal tip of the IAC motor with a rag and carb cleaner.

Re-installation is easy, place a small drop of oil onto the IAC motor O ring and smear it evenly. Place the motor back into the housing (it can only go in one way) Place a drop of your favorite thread locker onto the holding bolts and re-tighten.

Place the connector back onto the IAC motor. Re-assemble the air box components leaving the air box cover off. I also checked mine to make sure it was still working. To do this I removed the fuel pump fuse and the electrical connector to the exhaust cable motor. Then turned the ignition on and listened for the stepper motor. You should be able to hear it moving in the housing. I then replaced the fuel pump fuse and the exhaust motor electrical connector and the air box cover and fired it up. Their was a bit of a difference in idle speed at warm up with the idle being a little higher. It settled back to normal as the motor warmed up. I do have the Erik Buell Racing ECM so it does idle faster when cold anyway. But if your IAC is really gunked up I could see how this could effect idle.

Sharkguy...you have the heart of a teacher. Nice piece of info that removes the fears of the novice to explore his bike. That be me! Thanks. Euly

The bike will compensate a bit if it is gunked up, it had to re-learn that it needed less steps to get the proper idle, hence your slightly higher than normal idle. It will re-adjust itself back : )

Thanks for the support guys, the little bit of gunk in mine is no doubt from the breather tube. I'm sure that oil mist eventually collects there and forms deposits. I haven't overfilled the oil in my bike, but I'll bet if done habitually there would have been a bigger mess in there. Froggy, you are probably right, but I had noticed the cold idle being a bit lower lately compared to a few months ago. It was also sputtering a bit at idle which I don't remember it doing before. Anyway, we'll see if this helps.

Many thanks Sharkguy! I'm doing a little maintenance on my '08 Uly (32k miles) right now and this will definitely make the TO DO list.

Thanks for de-mystifying this part.
Until now, I had no idea what the thing looked like and didn't think it could be taken out.

Sharkguy, nice work! I have had to do almost exactly the same procedure on my Dodge Ram pickup a couple times over the 108,000 miles I have on it. It would idle real poorly, occasionally stall at idle, the check engine light would turn on and the computer would store a code against the IAC. I have no doubt that these XB's will have very similar symptoms if they are gunked up. You have done a lot of people a big favor with this write-up!

Hey Al, what yr. of Dodge Ram do you have? I have an 03 with the 5.7(hemi), 103K, and am wondering if I should be doing this to! See ya around.

Hi Greg! Sorry this reply is so late. My Dodge Ram is an older one with a 5.9L or 360 engine. It is a 1997 with 108,000 miles on it now.

I'm really not sure if the Hemis have the same issues or not. Take care, hope we can go for a ride sometime!

Did this to the XT yesterday, and it was a little funky in there. In prep for the MN trip, the XT received following maintenance:

New tires (Michelin PR 2's)
New belt (old one was fine, BTW)
New rear brake pads
New interactive exhaust valve cable (other one was broken).

She is snorty as ever! Can't wait to enjoy some cooler temps, see family and hopefully put faces with names of badwebbers!

Fltwistygirl, Just FYI, the high temp today in SE MN is supposed to reach 90 degrees and it looks like a severe thunderstorm may be moving in. Probably not much cooler than Florida? Anyway, you are very welcome here and I hope you enjoy your trip!

Motorbike-
Thanks, I'm looking forward to my great escape!

In MN, at least it cools off somewhat at night. With the exception of Wednesday night, it's only been dropping to the 70's, and is still humid. My 5 pm ish ride home has been scorching, mid to high 90's on the bank sign. 104 at 11:30 a.m. a couple Saturdays ago, bleah!

I'll get to head north to Duluth and the Iron range, it's usually cooler there, and worst case scenario, friends in Chisholm and Duluth both have a/c!! And hooray, lake swimming with no water moccasins OR alligators! Just muskies and blood suckers!

Yeah thanks for the reminder about horseflies! Got my deet packed...blood sucking bastages. Can't wait though, very excited to get back to the north shore!

The PR2's seem "heavy" compared to the pirellis. So happy the XT seems to be well though, thanks Sharkguy for posting the info.

Just did mine. It was dir-tay. Lotsa dirty oil. Used a bunch of swabs getting it clean.
