I want to do a 1050cc kit and stage 1 head work on my 9. I need to remove the jugs/heads/pistons. My question is to gain access to all of this can I just rotate the engine or do I need to remove the frame. Also, if I have to remove the frame do I need some type of stand for the bike? I have hand tools, a shop manual, and some mechanical smarts. I just dont know how to support the bike or the engine during a frame replacement. Thanks!! |

My question is to gain access to all of this can I just rotate the engine or do I need to remove the frame. Rotate and remove the frame. Buy the shop manual, and avoid a lot of mystery. Also, if I have to remove the frame do I need some type of stand for the bike? You'll need to support the front of the bike (front, forks, frame) because you'll be lifting this off the engine/swing arm half. The engine swing arm half will need little support, the front half will need lots of support, maybe you can hang it from the rafters. New12r used a trash can! Oh, I see you have a manual, read up on disassembly. |

If you put the swing arm half on there it would get the engine to a better height to do the engine work. Once you get the engine/swing arm half apart from the front half, working on the engine will be easy. You'll need someone to help you lift the front/frame half off the engine/swing arm half. There are pictures somewhere of us with New12r's bike in half somewhere, I'm still looking. |

G4..I've always used a good "engine hoist for removing my frames. You know...a cherry picker? Nothing finer |

Hung my frame from the garage rafters and a cable winch puller. I used a jack from below to lower the engine (rotate) |

When I stripped mine down to the motor to paint the frame, I used the motorcycle lift that lift with the muffler. Strapped the motor down good and tight and started removing parts until i had nothing left but a motor and wiring harness. Went back together just as easy as it came apart. I feel it would be alot easier removing the frame from the motor to do the type of work you are wanting to do, just my 2 cents |
