It might help but I would focus on the obvious. If the intake seals are ok then check compression. If compression numbers are mid to high 170's or even 180's then retard the timing or shim the cylinders up. If you want I will send you the compression guages that I used. Other possibilities are carbon build up or a leak somewhere in or around the throttle body. Good luck.

Why would it ping at the same RPM every time?

If yours doesn't ping thats great I envy you. I'm not so lucky. The fact that we haven't heard of one coming apart yet doesn't make me ok with it.

And you are correct not being "OK" with it.

Mine pinged, but ironically, I didn't know it did until I read the first posts about pinging, on this board. Did the Davo mod but was not happy with "all" the results. So I have since returned timing to the "factory"(?) spec.

Since then, I've not hear the engine ping; even on the few 100 deg days we had in SoCal.

2007 Uly with 4,900 miles, ridden from 5,000 to 10,000 feet in Colorado, stock exhaust, ECM, K&N filter, right side air scoop, catch-can and run DurAlt, upper cylinder head lubricant and combustion chamber cleaner (run in all my air cooled bikes) and have not had a pinging issue nor have I done the TPS reset yet.

Court, I don't think I've ever mentioned the pinging, but my 06 does it, so make that 21. : ) I'd be willing to bet there are many more doing it than being reported. For example, you'll find no official case open for me because every time I mention it to my dealership, they tell me it's normal, and that all XB's just run lean. I asked them to check the timing once, but they said they'd have to charge me for it, so I decided to just live with it. If it damages the engine, then I guess that's what the warranty is for.

Count me as 22, and I could simply copy Sanchez' post. Just bought my 06 new this Summer, after owning a (new) 04 12R and a (new) 03 9S- neither of which EVER pinged like this...

Snowscum,
I was waiting for someone else to take a stab at your question. I will give it a try. RPM is one of many factors that are used in the timing and fueling of the VDO-EFI system on your Uly. TPS and engine temperature are some other factors. Now I bet if you were to run low gears at the same rpm that you pinged at higher gears then the engine will not ping. The factors of RPM and TPS determine how hard the engine is working. At low gear operation when you have the same TPS and RPM readings, the engine is not loaded as it is at highway gear. So how does the ECM know? If you look at the wiring harness the VSS (vehicle speed sensor) goes to the speedo but before it gets there it splits off and goes directly to the ECM. This is the principle behind the "other white wire" theory. Under certain RPM, ET, RPM and VSS the fueling and timing are pushed to the lean and early limit. Those of you with VDSTS, a laptop and a top bag should run some logs and see the numbers. They are a testament to the engineers that created the clean and efficient burn. The problem is that less than perfect fuel and greater than calculated compression will push the edge of the perfect burn toward a slow audible meltdown. Now I will stop and try to get a life and leave you folks at Badweb a little peace and quiet.

After the direct link and dyno it does back fire out the exhaust. It didnt back fire before.
But it did ping like it does now before that was installed. So even if they did run a leaner map, it didnt affect the pinging.
So the timing thing would play into all of this. I just dont want to lose any power if it gets retard-ed.

If the 08's ping, what would the fix be?

Fuel additives, shim up the cylinders, or call Buell CS. The CPS is fixed and can't be moved like the 06 and 07.

Just a quick comment on surge and ping, My 08 Uly 6 weeks and 10k + Very little surge [hard to notice] and no ping. Rain creates a few problems, but they just remind me to slow down for conditions. No problems with any mechanics of the bike, first service other than fluids is yet to come.

Interesting thread over in the XB forum. This owner found out changing the plug gap had a huge effect on his pinging:

http://www.badweatherbikers.com/buell/messages/327 77/311001.html?1191436890

Any of you guys with pinging issues ever investigated this? My guess is that the smaller gap is slower in igniting the fuel/air mixture, thus effectively retarding the timing. Larger gap ignites the mixture quicker effectively advancing the timing.

No cost and relatively easy to try. If you've got a hard-core pinger, it'd certainly be worth investigating.

Yes, the rain was the first that I had noticeable surging and misses, First thought was the issues I've read about on this site. Naturally I was ready to assume that 08 still had some issues, But all problems left with the rain. It was a hard rain and more than once, It must be air intake related, tank bag may direct more moisture where Uly does'nt like.

OK is that 10K miles or Kilometers
either way , well done.
I picked up my 08 Uly about a month ago and I have about 2500 mi. on it.
In my defense I do not commute and I have several other bikes to share riding duties with.
You have to ride them all or they get jealous.
Case in point, I had not ridden mr DR for a few weeks we went on a awesome ride into the Bob Marshal wilderness area and son of a bitch if my DR didn't throw me off and screw up my day.
Ever have to ride back 80 miles in the dirt and another 150 with no clutch, no starter(micro switch on lever gone now)and half a gear shift lever.
So now I am parking the Uly on the far side of garage away from DR I don't want any more jealousy issues

I have to admit every time I ride the thing I am happier than the time before.
When I first went looking for another bike the Uly was not even on my list. However I own it now and love it. I have no issues with pinging at all it does surge some at low RPM ,But so did my last GS
I plan on sending my can to drummer once our weather turns foul this fall, but I would have to say overall I am very happy.
Happy enough I have a new 1125R coming in Nov,

Court - mine pinged when new, but unlike most dealers, mine fixed my problem during the 1000 mile service. Its been 23 months and about 1k miles per month and the ping has been just about non-existent. A couple of times when hot and I lug the motor it has pinged just slightly. My dealer retimed the bike when I told them what I was experiencing. The dealer told me the factory did not set the timing right. They also told me they set the air-fuel mixture for maximum power which is code for richened up the fuel air mixture.
