My vote goes for WI. It seems that I have problems with people not realizing that the left lane is for faster traffic and the right lane is for slower traffic. For example, if you were in the left and someone was behind going faster than you, you should move to the right lane and let that person pass. Also, once you are in the right you should stay there - unless you need to pass. People in WI love to drive in the left lane - regardless if they are going slower/faster than traffic in the right lane.

What about you - what state grinds your gears!

Oh, don't get me started.

We deal with the same thing in NC. It's amazing that you can be all over their bumper at 55 but can't pass them on the right at 70. We call them "left lane bandits". I'm not sure people are taught what the left lane is for during driver's ed class.

The other thing that irritates me is for someone to turn in front of me, forcing me to hit the brakes and slow down to a crawl and look behind me and there's no one there. They could have waited. If you pull out in front of me, get on the gas and go.

Oh, I could go on.......this is part of the reason we don't live in the city any longer!

Don't know about the state with the worst, but my vote for city with the worst drivers would have to go to Atlanta, GA.
To get a license there, all you have to do is parallel park.

I take it you've never been to New Jersey : ) Where as all lanes are fast. Left turns are hard to make, and blinkers are optional. If you see a blinker, be aware they are coming over regardless of who or what is in the lane next to them. Not sure if they are those Massholes are worse : )

Actually there are horrible drivers everywhere, but I like to tease my wife (who is from NJ) cause her driving test was in a parking lot with some cones..

Left freeway lanes are often seen as the "thru" lanes in the metro areas to make room for all the merging traffic. Kind of a hassle to have to lane jump every mile or so everytime you come across an offramp or onramp. There is no such thing as a "fast lane".

Me, personally, I despise tail-gators who can't figure out how to change lanes and demand that you get out of their way. Had someone do that to me once in the city of West Bend WI, in the city, on a city street, as I was in the right lane, doing the speed limit, with an infant in a carseat in the backseat, and the idiot was flashing her lights, honking her horn, yelling at me, waving various fingers at me for several blocks ... so I slowed down to 10mph until she finally figured out how to go around.

There's bad drivers everywhere, no place has a monopoly on bad drivers.

I think that one of the states still has a "keep right except to pass" law - PA?

I noticed that WI definitely has left lane drivers who will run the same speed as the other lanes. They also let tractor/trailer rigs in the left lane too.

TX is another state.

ALL states have bad drivers!

Here in CA, they'll come at you from ALL lanes.

Any state I happen to be in is the worst at that time.

Odd thing happened to me a few months ago. For some reason or another, three cars ran me out of my lane and almost into curbs or off the road in less than 10 days. Every one of the cars was driven by a black woman. I was telling a friend about this and he smiled and said, "Is it the same one each time? Cause if it is, it's your fault.".

Had to laugh it off after that.

let's see, when i was just over in NJ, got cut off and when i honked my horn the guy flipped me off. KY people tend to like to race with you if you try and get my them. FL especially in miami is where i learned to be a defensive driver. for the most part that i have seen in chattanooga is that most of the people are just not in a hurry and pretty laid back. oh god, it's just all bad like DJ said. but glitch you are spot on about atlanta. i cringe everytime i go back to tampa.

I dont think it can be a state by state thing. I find that as a rule not all cases but most that it is a city X rural. Only my view I find city drivers rude rural drivers Courtious.

Not sure it matters where you go... a$$holes seem to be a surplus everywhere.

I think it stems from the fact that people are less aware of others when in their cars. Just note how many "gold diggers" there are on the road. Would these brain surgeons be picking their noses at a bus stop?

I love when you go to pass one of these morons and they realize that they've been doing 10 under. Then they want to speed up while your taking their lane. ...to keep you from passing? Are they insulted that you have some place to go?

I think things reached their worst, for me, when I started seeing morons reading the paper during the morning commute - no kidding! At least, once a week, some idiot is reading the morning paper while driving. WTH is a matter with these people!?

Anyway, I'm not going to say any more on this subject - its easy bait : )

My vote is Maryland - at least Montgomery County (right outside of DC). Everyday on the road is like the films you used to watch in Drivers Education. You just wait for someone to do the absolute wrong thing. You don't have to wait long. About the only thing I haven't seen yet is driving on the sidewalk. Anywhere else I've ever lived (NY, SC, TX, AL, CO, Asia) if you miss your turn, you go around the block. Here, the accepted solution is to perform a U-Turn in the middle of a controlled intersection. Yes, that's right - under a traffic signal (red, green, yellow - it doesn't matter) or a 4-way stop sign. The first time I saw it I was floored! But after two years I still see it at least once per week. Of course another popular alternative is backing up. Ten feet, an entire CITY BLOCK - it's all the same here.

Add to that a high percentage of cars with what appear to be foreign-born drivers, often with diplomatic plates on high-end SUVs like Acuras, M-Bs, and Escalades. Many don't appear to be able to see over the steering wheel. They must be using "the Force" It's absolute mayhem.

A day at the DMV is like a field trip to the UN. Amazing how many people go to get driver's licenses and neither speak nor read English. I'm no xenophobe but I guess this is evidence that some sterotypes do have a factual basis.

Bad driving is probably universal, but INTENTIONAL BAD DRIVING - here they have perfected it to almost an art form.

California. Between the low fat decaf latte, laptop on the passenger seat and cell phone permanently attached to their
ears they can hardly be bothered with such a menial task as actually driving the car. and God help you if it begins to rain.
Just thinking about it gave me a cold chill up and down my spine.

CA has some great roads, but the trick is surviving long enough to reach them!

Why is it when ever this issue comes up it seems that if you read the responses you can see the real answer. Everybody expects to own the piece of road they are on. Some one pulled in front of ME. Someone cut ME off. Someone hogged MY lane. Someone wouldn't get out of MY way. Some Blue-hair drove for fifty miles at forty five with their turn signal on and wouldn't let ME past them. Some idiot was doing a hundred in the right lane and cut in on ME.

WE don't own the roads, we share them with all kinds of people. From highly qualified race drivers, professional drivers, sleepy drivers, too busy drivers, stupid drivers, a$$holes, and people that really don't deserve to be there.

But we DO have to share with them so if you expect everyone to drive like you do you will always be disappointed with your drive. Share and expect stupidity, it will reduce your stress and allow you to handle the crap that comes at you more easily.

For the past couple of years I have been watching what happens when I am hauling butt on a back road and I get stuck behind a slow poke. They almost always turn off in a short time, or they will speed up in a passing zone making it impossible to pass, or they pull over and let me by. It is up to them. They have the right to be there doing their thing as much as I do. Many times I have seen where the going slow for a while may have saved my life, like coming around a blind corner into an unknown road construction zone, or an accident scene.

Grand Rapids, MI. The local young blonde headed women(German/Dutch descent, not dumb blonde), show absolutly no mercy to anyone going slower, and drive like they are on fire. Plus the highway system was designed for cars in 1910 so there are very short merge ramps with 70 mph speeds.

Slaughter is right, PA still has that law on the books and even highway signs stating such, but you still have to be able to read/see them to understand them. So hang up the phone, put down the paper, and for goodness sakes....

Chicago,

I won't even go there unless I'm getting paid for it.

But the traffic is to be expected in Chicago, when you go there you know what is going to happen and what people are going to do to you. My sister lived on the north side for over 6 years and I never paid her a visit. Now she moved to Boston, I guess I will have to go find out what thats all about someday.
