I replaced the shifter on my new XB (fell over) but when tightened to the degree they were originally, the shifter is too tight and lacks the spring action. If I loosen the bolt a tad, it seems to shift okay but the bolt is nowhere near as secure as it was originally. Does the factory use some sort of Loc-Tite compound to keep the bolt secure? Is that why it took some effort to loosen the bolt when I took the shifter off? Am I forgetting something really basic? thanks all! |

It sounds like the shift lever you got is a little wider than the shoulder on the bolt. You will need to remove a little bit of material from the sides of the shift lever until it no longer binds up when tight. |

That's a good thought...I'll have to check it out in the a.m. and compare the two. Thanks, brother! And if anyone has any other ideas since I'm taking the bolt back off anyway... |

Blue loc tite for thing you want to stay but sometimes need to come off. Red loc tite for stuff you just want to stay. I personally, put blue loc tite on EVERY bolt I remove or replace. (Message edited by buelltroll on August 08, 2007) |

In college, I mistakenly secured my skateboard trucks with red Loc-tite. They never came back off! |

That shaft that comes out of your primary cover is part of an assembly that bolts in. That could be bent as well. I have not yet had the primary cover off my XB (dang thing won't break), but had the M2 cover off more times then I can count. From memory, I could see how that assembly could be "pushed in" if hit just right in a tipover. You don't have to split the cases to get at it, but you do have to pull the clutch / primary chain / stator bell as a unit. Something else to keep in mind if you have other shifting problems or noises in there. |

Thanks! I hope not. It seemed to shift okay right after my...uh, debacle. Well, off to the garage to mess with it. If you never hear from me again that means that something went wrong but you'll have a friend in heaven looking out for all Buells! |

SOLVED! The bushing from the old shifter had to be transferred to the new shifter. Simple as that. Works like it should now. Thanks to the guys who took the time to give me stuff to consider. h}} |
