I just bought a 97 M2 that has had a very hard life. It was cheap and I am a fairly competent mechanic, so I bought it.

The bike needs rear isolators and it also has leaky cylinder base gaskets. Should I remove the engine and swingarm carrier as an assy. and then fix the base gaskets? Or am I just making more work for myself by removing everything?

It just looks like the whole job could be done easier with the frame out of the way. And between the two jobs there isn't very much going to be left holding the engine in the frame except the wiring.

What would you guys do?

What Phat said. You're going to want to replace the isolators anyway, so the carrier's gonna come off sooner or later.

If it had such a hard life, I'd give it an all new one. I would do a complete frame off, down to the last nut & bolt. Paint, polish, chrome, carbon fiber.

Oldskoolef - can't offer any technical advice on the M2, other than go ahead and buy a service and parts manual! Not sure what Buell dealers are closest to you, but we did stop in at Crossroads HD/Buell in Wilkesboro last October on our way to Boone. They had a few Buells on the floor, clothing and even employees wearing Buell shirts and hats.

I would like to invite you over to Carolina Corner Carvers. You'll find some local Buellers on C3 and a couple with M2s.

Welcome to BadWeB and hope to see you on Storm Fronts.

I agree with your plan to pull the mess apart, I am unsure of the exact details of your bike but the 2000 year model M2 benefits from updating to I believe they are 01 and newer isolators, and the front exhaust needed to be done for a more trouble free bike. You will enjoy it when it is done if you do all the updates you find on bad web.
