Are all the Tuber calipers interchangeable?

Is there one which is for some reason more desirable than another?

Are there any other models (non buell) to source a caliper from?

This is for a 99 X1.

On Tubeys the late model Nissan and the older PM 6 piston calipers are fully interchangeable. I'm running a PM caliper on my 01 M2 and it's stopping power is excellent. I can't give you any comparison because I've never run the Nissan on my bike. The main difference between the two calipers is that the PM has 2 retaining pins holding the brake pads whereas the Nissans have a single retaining pin. As far as mechanical function goes it matters not whether the calipers have one or two pins. If I am not mistaking the Nissans have differential piston bores and this is supposed to be superior. I can't give you the comparison of the two calipers' swept brakepad area which is the real data on comparison of these two units. Some of the real Buell gurus can shed much more knowledgable opinion on this subject then I. Anyone? KK

the older calipers have limited choices in pads. you can still get HH sintered pads for the nissins, but kevlar is it for the PM's in readily available. still stops pretty good.

All front calipers on all tubers are interchangable,

All nissins all years will fit all tubers.

You can fit a Berembo rear on any tuber as long as you have the carrier.

All XB's and Blasts run the same Nissin rear that will fit all tubers as long as you have the Nissin carrier.

The early tubers with the "Gambler" rear brake, IE the RSS, RR1200/1000 will not fit any newer tuber (95 and up)

IIRC you should use the correct master cylinder for the caliper being used!!! i believe they are different???

I will probably look for another nissin

The stock one, the brake pad pin, which is screwed into the caliper, was impossible to removed, first broke Allen wrenches, then rounded the socket, tried heat, tried vise grip on the other side of the pin, all that happened is the pin broke. drilled it out until only a shell was left, broke an extractor off in the shell. Gave up...

The old PM caliper tends to be "spongier" than the Nissin though is capable of some serious stopping power. The Nissin can get grabby, especially when at a good temperature. I like the pad retention of the PM's better...though the pads can get noisy and rattle about. Those pads are larger and have much thicker pad material than the Nissins. The Nissins are more modern, smaller and lighter. Both have differential bores. I like the PM better for a single disc application, I switched to Nissin for dual discs.

How did you mount the caliper on left hand fork? I didn't know a left hand Nissan caliper was available.

It's an adapter from the Buell Race Dept. (race only! ) for an import bolt pattern Nissin.

How do you identify the Nissin vs the PM just by seeing the right side?

The PM caliper is huge, has two caliper retention bolts, a small PM logo, and a large pegasus symbol over the largest caliper bore. The outside of the caliper bores are round and the have a natural aluminum as-cast finish.

The Nissin is much smaller, is faceted on the ends, has onky one caliper retention pin, and simply has the letters "BUELL" written on the side. They have a silver finish.

I bought these rotors when they were still inexpensive. Now the EBC rotors are the best deal. With a single disc the EBC lasted roughly twice as long as the stock rotor. I've never had any Buell rotor warp considerably, not even after having a caliper lock up...twice.

thanks for the info, found a great deal on a real nice nissin caliper with master cyclinder and new looking pads.
