On two different occasions, my fan has continued to run for 30 minutes after riding. The bike is cool so it is not a heat problem. Anyone else have this issue? Is there a fix? I no longer trust that it will shut off and expect to come back to a drained battery. |

You have a problem. On a smokin hot day, my fan runs a matter of minutes as in a couple not 30 ! |

Yeah, you have a problem. Maybe a bad head temperature sensor. |

I just started timing my fan shutoff times after my 30 minute ride to work. It has been an average of 2 minutes and 35 seconds. The longest has been about 3 and a half minutes after an 90 degree stop and go ride because of heavier than normal traffic, which turned out to be a 45 minute ride to work. |

Adrian or anyone else, Any idea on how hard it is to replace the head temperature sensor? I'm wondering whether my dealer will fix it because it doesn't always do this. |

Iugradmark, It could be a near short in the wire going to the ET. If I remember correctly 200 ohms or less on the ET connector will trip the fan on (greater than 428F). If someone with manual could please chime with the resistance for or near 302F it would be helpful. Then you could check the ET sensor for accuracy by putting a DVOM on the wire and checking it. http://www.badweatherbikers.com/buell/messages/142 838/214775.html |

A quick check of the ET sensor wire would be a good idea. The wire is very vulnerable. Just pull the airbox and the airbox base for a good look. While you are in there, its a good idea to check the O2 wire as well for future security. |

Davo, Thanks for the suggestions. I am just checking but is there any legit reason why the fan would run that long? I can't imagine but it was in the mid 80's today and I rode the bike fairly hard before shutting down. |

The fan should not run more than a couple of minutes after shut down even on a hot day. You have a problem with the ET sensor or the wire to the sensor. When ET reads less than 302F with the ignition off the fan should stop running. The more resistance on that circuit the cooler the engine temperature is. As resistance on the wire reduces the engine temperature is higher. A near or dead short will trick the ECM into thinking the engines is very hot and the need for the fan to continue running. Regardless it should be an easy thing to trouble shoot. I have never changed a ET on a Buell so I can't comment on ease of the procedure to preform. Do you have a VDSTS? |

Check the battery. Make sure the battery is good and that it's fully charged. Check the battery cables and terminations. Especially the ground cable. As Al would say: all electrical problems are ground related. Until proven otherwise. |

Any idea on how hard it is to replace the head temperature sensor? Never done it on the Uly, but it was fairly easy on my X1. Just had to remove the rocker box cover and was able to access it and screw it out. Screw in the new sensor and reassemble. |
