"Chad is using the Royal Purple synthetic. His usage is less than mine." I don't use Royal Purple. I use Redline 20w-50 synthetic. Good stuff!! I change my oil every 3000 miles and seldom add any oil. Even after doing a track day, the oil level doesn't drop. Motoman break in is your friend! |

I broke mine in by the book and use Mobile 1 20w50. Mine hardly uses any oil too. It uses less now at 15k than it did for about the first 5-6k. Even then, I never added more than about 4-6 oz. between oil changes. I change oil every 2k though because it is easier for me to count by two's than by three's. I think climate and riding style/conditions have a lot to do with oil usage too. |

Treadmarks, The 44mag's top end rebuild in the fall of 06 starts to make sense now. The only thing I can't figure out is why the Texas engine swap pinged out of the box. There could be two different issues. As you know I sold my Uly and it was running great. The new owner promised to keep me posted on the bikes condition. The warranty is still good until October 07. I sure do miss it. I still wrench on some local Buells to keep me in the loop. |

I few interesting points ... 1. My engine was pinging like CRAZY and it was eating ~ 1 quart of oil per 1000 miles. 2. Buell rebuilt the engine at 5000 miles. I broke it in with normal HD 20W-50 and it hardly ate any oil. 3. When I switched to the HD 20W-50 synthetic oil, it started eating oil within 100 miles. One more thing ... not a single ping since the rebuild with 1500 miles on the new engine. |

I should mention that the engine does not eat very much oil ... nowhere near what it was before the rebuild. But it does eat significantly more oil since I switched to the HD synthetic, |

I wonder how much effect on the pinging, and valve seal failure is caused by taking half of an air cooled motor, blocking the moving air with the frame, and depending on a fan to keep it cool enough to avoid overheating. |

Lorazepam, I do not think the problems that you listed are directly related to the cooling of the engine. The rear exhaust temps on my bagger are significantly higher than the Uly's. It appears that the pinging issue is history on the later bikes. There is a late 06 Uly near me that I hope to check the timing on it some day soon. |

Treadmarks, Since you are at sea level and are ping free I would really like to know where your timing is and what date your bike was released. |

Yes Davo, I am at sea level and was ping free till I got the jingle at 3000 rpm 8000 miles. I can't help ya on the timing just yet. However the date on the frame is JUN 06. I can understand you getting "the Jingles" at 8000 RPM! |

Mine was October 05. I am very curious if late Ulys are also "late" Ulys. MY bike was one of the first 100. (Message edited by davo on June 29, 2007) |

Now I need to find out what my timing currently is, and how much I need for the 1250 kit. |

Is that a over bore kit? Same compression ratio? |

The build date on my Uly is Sept. '05. It doesn't ping, knock, consume large quantities of oil or show any other undesireable traits. (It doesn't like Avon Azaros, but it's happy with Diablo Stradas) I guess I got a good one. |

Davo, 1250 big bore kit from NRHS with hurricane forged pistons and total seal gapless rings, same compression ratio. Also NRHS Stage 1 heads ported with AV&V bullet valve guides and viton seals. The new valve guides have a viton o ring just before the stop to make sure there is no oil seepage between the guide and head. The guides have a very tapered tip so they will allow for more flow, less turbulance in the valve pocket area. Their valve stem seals have springs instead of formed wire around the top to maintain pressure and are pressed on to the guide instead of HD hat seal design. I am pretty confident this will control oil loss through the valve train. I cant stand the fact that such a simple engine design was designed with such an inferior valve seal design. I be pimpin mah ride, from the inside out! |

Sounds like a great set up. I am eager to hear about performance and static timing. |
