I have a 2006 XB12Ss with approximately 5100 miles on it. I have noticed that the belt is no longer completely flush against the stay and has "creeped" out about a 1/16" or so. I don't know if this is a problem or not, so I went over to a friend's house, broke out the service manual and went to work. We followed the instructions religiously. Pulled the brake caliper off, loosened up the rear axle and even pulled the side primary drive cover off to see if there was any visual indication of the problem. Nothing jumped out so we moved the belt back into the flush position and properly torqued everything but up. When we then spun the wheel in the forward position, the belt again "creeped" out to about 1/16" but no more. If we rotated the wheel spin backwards, we could see the belt again move back flush and tight against the stay. Is this a problem or just normal movement? Do I need to get my dealer involved in a potential warranty issue? Any thoughts or suggestions would be most welcome. Thanks! |

You could always undo the 6 retaining bolts on the rear pulley and put some shims(washers)between the wheel and the pulley and bolt back together, problem solved! |

I too would like to know the answer to this question. Myself and TheCloser followed the Service Manual instructions of putting the wheel back and belt back, torqued everything to specs, yet the belt would not snug up against the rear pulley's stop. This just doesn't seem normal. |

Has the bike ever fallen over or was it in an accident? There is another thread on the Badweb recently where the bike went down and he noticed similar problems as yours. Turns out that the swingarm pivot shaft was bent, thus throwing the swingarm out of alignment and causing the belt to not track properly. If you want to check for this condition, it's just a matter of unscrewing the swingarm pivot shaft enough to see if the swingarm moves around any while turning the shaft. |

Nope, my Lightning has never fallen over or been in an accident. |

When did it first start doing this? If it recently came back from the dealer for a service and you noticed the condition since then, maybe something happened to it while it was in their possession? Regardless, it's probably not going to be a problem unless the belt starts showing some damage. Then the dealer could most likely justify a warranty claim to check various parts for damage like motor mounts, stabilizer links, swingarm pivot shaft & bearings, idler sprocket bearings, etc. AFAIK, there's really no adjustment for belt alignment, only parts that can wear, break or get damaged. |

Sparky, This condition just started after I had the rear tire changed at the dealer since I was having some other service performed. Both this dealer and the original dealer I bought it from are in agreement that this is not a problem and that the belt will "work" itself back into position. With this in mind, I am going to monitor it closely and see if the situation changes in any way. |

OK, the dealer changed a rear tire. That's significant. Read on for some clues. Check these links Swingarm bent or what and Help!! What is wrong here and decide for yourself. The thing in common with these 2 incidents is external force on the swingarm. Unless you watched the man remove the tire, you don't really know what may have happened to your bike. If you feel brave, ask the technician who worked on your bike if he had any difficulty removing the axle. Perhaps he had to 'persuade' the swingarm to loosen its grip on a stuck axle like in the second link? Granted, in your case the belt creeping is not a problem yet, but keep us posted if things change for the better or worse. TIA. |

Prior to The Closer taking his bike to this new Buell dealership (they just started selling Buells after some years of selling only Harleys), myself and him were the ones who removed and installed the rear wheel. Thus, we know 100% that: 1) The rear wheel was installed properly, with utmost care and dedication to specification, prior to the dealer touching that rear wheel. And there was NO creep then. 2) We cleaned the rear axle, then used anti-sieze on the threads when we put the axle back on, then followed proper procedure in tightening the axle back on (torque to spec, loosen 2 turns, torque to a higher ft. lbs.). Thus, I can guarantee 100% that wheel was installed right, and that dealership technician should NOT have had ANY problems removing that axle as long as he followed proper procedures like we did. Something just smells fishy because when you bring a bike in functioning 100%, then you get it back and it's not 100%, some event took place at that place that wasn't correct. However, the only evidence we have is the belt creep and nothing else! |

Is the chain tensioner bolted back up correctly and snugly? |

How do I adjust the tracking on the drive belt on my 2000 blast its running to the far right up against the guard. I think probably by adjusting the engine mount struts but what has to be loosened to allow things to move around? |

There is no adjustment as the entire engine, transmission and swingarm assembly is all ridigly connected in the lateral (side to side) sense. If the belt is not rubbing or fraying on the edge, it is fine, no adjustment required. If it is rubbing a belt guard, then you may resolve that issue by slight adjustment (loosen and reposition) of the guard itself. |

Ok, Not sure what to do here. I have a 05 XB12Scg and i just replaced the rear sprocket and belt and when i was done i took it for a test drive. Everything seemed perfect but there was a noise that seemed like the belt was rubbing but against somehting. I looked at it and it was the footpeg bracket. Also when i push the bike forward it makes that same noise and when i push the bike backwards it makes the noise and then the belt starts twisting like its being pulled off the idle pulley. It only happens when i push the bike backwards. when i push it forwards after that it realigns itself but still makes that same noise. If someone could help me with this problem that would be great. Not 100% positive what to do???? |
