This was originally posted by S3tbolt, however, when I attempted to move it, things didn't go as planned. Nonetheless, here is his question. My S3 is 10 years old, well maintained, brake fluid flushed once a year. This year the front got mushy, I can almost pull the front lever to the grip. I'm thinking the master cylinder is toast. I've reflushed the system and still same problem. Any thoughts. |

Well, it is either the Caliper, the Brakeline, or the Master cylinder... Have you checked the banjo bolt between the Master cylinder and the Brakeline? Maybe it vibrated loose? |

Everything is good and secure, all contact surfaces clean and fluid free. I'm just wondering because of the age and DOT 5 fluid the internal rubber parts have taken a beating. As I understand DOT 5 is very hard on internal brake components. |

That does have steel-braided brake lines? You might ask a good shop (ie crotch rocket shop) to bleed it for you. That's usually my issue with brakes. Failing that, I'd rebuild the caliper and master cylinder. Parts shouldn't cost too much. |

S3bolt, do a search for Henrick's really clever brake bleeding procedure using a large medical syringe. It's easy, fast, and it works like a charm. |

We can close this thread, I've rebuilt the brakes. As I suspected Master cylinder was bad, and now the system had that rock solid feel restored. I figured out a clever way to remove the caliper pistons too with little effort... |
