Lance Reynolds aka Needforspeed2 hit a deer today on the way back from Luckenbach,Tx. I just left the hospital, his wife(who just got out TODAY[what timing!]after giving birth to twin boys)is there by his side.He is in critical but stable condition with(known thus far) a ruptured liver and some broken face bones. He was following me back from what WAS a nice ride when two deer appeared in front of us in our lane.I barely made it between them and I guess spooked the second one into jumping right in front of him hitting his bars and taking him off the back.Lance and the deer slid a little over 100' before coming to rest in the roadway while his bike continued on 600',passing me as I stopped and not stopping until it had gone up a grassy hill, hitting a fence.Luckily(!?!) a DPS trooper was chasing us and was able to summon immediate help.Let's all pray and offer some words of support for the Lance clan, shall we?Even if you don't know him. Lance,my thoughts and prayers are with you and your family, brother.May you have a speedy recovery and your newest additions to the family live long and healthy lives. Bill satx |

Bill, two questions: 1) Why was DPS chasing you? 2) Did you tag the deer? r-t |

I'm sure he'll bounce back from this. Good thing he wasn't hurt worse. |

I've noticed a general increase in the population of deer here in the Southeast. It might be time for me to take up hunting. The meat would be good, but helping to cull the herd is the main motivator. I hope I get Bambi and his little friend Thumper. Get well Lance. |

It wasn't like a high speed chase and we were running, the trooper had just come after us to tell us to slow it down a bit.I wasn't even aware of him,my concentration stays AHEAD of me at all times,as should everyone's!!!!!The trooper said Lance's brake light never even came on.I suspect Lance was looking in his mirror when the deer came out and that is why he didn't take evasive action.I had flickered my brake light to alert him to no avail, obviously.I feel like crap(!!!!!!!) to say the least.I can't help but think that maybe if I had quit yackin and left Luckenbach sooner, maybe if I had been going a little slower, maybe if my bike wasn't so damn loud and spooked the deer, maybe if I had done what I know I need to do and put better lighting on my bike....this wouldn't have happened. It all happened so fast though. The first deer almost got me but I managed to slip between the two of them and make it by.I really didn't even have time to slow down!I just flickered my brake light and did what I had to do to save my own hide.Next thing I knew all I saw of Lance's bike was the dim green glow of his broken headlight. It wasn't until that point that I noticed the patrolcar behind us.I noticed that his bike was still upright and for a second was relieved thinking and hoping that maybe just a hoof had made contact and had taken out his light. As I was stopping the bike passed me on the left shoulder and went into the grass. My stomach just DROPPED as I noticed that Lance was no longer atop his motorcycle and the reality of what just took place set in.Man,I thought Lance was dead there for a minute. The trooper was feeling here and there looking for a pulse.I can't even describe in words how sickened I was at that point and how relieved I was when I noticed that his chest was moving and he was breathing.Luckily,we weren't far from the nearest town and paramedics arrived promptly to stabilize him and get him to an open area for a chopper to pick him up.I don't have any updates on his condition. If his wife calls me to let me know I will relay the updates.Until then, please pray for ol Lance and his family as they have GOT to be in bad shape right now. "I feel like crap(!!!!!!!) to say the least.I can't help but think that maybe if I had" Bill, Woulda, coulda, shoulda will get you nowhere. Sometimes stuff just happens. I've seen deer locally that looked about to jump out in front of me on the freeway and when I hit the gas on the bike the extra noise sometimes spooked them into waiting. You did what you could, don't look back and don't blame yourself. We each have to ride our own ride. Crashing sucks. There's little you could have done beyond what you did to prevent this, it could have been you or even both of you that got tagged by the deer. And it's not like the deer did it on purpose either, sometimes stuff just happens. Lance will survive, that's the only thing to focus on right now. |
