After turning 20K miles (at exactly my 1-yr anniversary) I did the 20K maintenance myself with no surprises, although it does take a while (I did the 10K also). So I'm all buttoned up and ready to get some miles in this (extended) weekend (I get Thurs and Fri off!) But yesterday I find a nail in my back tire... ...so a new tire (Avon Azaro AV46ST) is on order, and the Uly is again up on the jack. And the weather here in NM looks great! Beautiful fall colors, etc. I'm tired of wrenching! Need to do some riding!! |

plug the tire and ride!!! I've got over 5000 miles after I put a plug in my Dunlop D616 rear tire and still going with-out any problem! |

I have 7k on my Scorpion Sync with 2 plugs in it. I got a nail in it on the ride home from the dealership after having it mounted. I plugged it. 200 miles later, I got another nail. I plugged it again. 7k it is showing wear marks, so I have a Pilot Road in the bull pen. It will be swapped out this weekend. |

Hmm, I have a "mushroom" plugger but the plugs do not seem to hold up well. Having put several plugs into this hole (after trimming the plugs disappear inside the tire after a few miles) I opted for a new tire. The Azaro has 4,000 miles on it, so I got half the wear out of it, anyway. I've never quite trusted patched road tires (YMMV) since it is---after all---your life. |

It appeard after I got to look at the inside of the tire, that the steel cords were cutting the plug. On another tire, the plug worked wonderfully. I rode 1400 miles on the plugged tire before I replaced it. |

Deer hunting weather! Got me three pronghorn a couple weeks ago Daves, in similar conditions in Wyoming. OK, it was 20 degrees warmer... <enter required thread content here> I think the caution on plugs is just that: the steel cords can be damaged, or cut the plug, either leading to a let-down experience. Dr. Greg, The day I rode my new Ulysses home from the dealership I picked up a staple of some sort in the rear tire (in the tread block). Tire was flat as a pancake after a few hours... I plugged it with a mushroom plug from a Progressive Suspension fix-a-flat kit and rode the tire until it was shot. No worries. PS. I gave it a serious work-out in the process. I use the Slime plugs from AutoZone and have had no problems with them disappearing or failing. For the 'it's your life' argument; I watched a guy on a Hyabusa sling a plug (one that we had installed earlier that morning) while going better than 165 mph. He just uneventfully pulled over with a completely flat rear tire and we re-plugged it. The tire happened to also be bald (what can I say?) so we rode to a dealer to have it replaced soon after and with no more high-speed shenanigans. |
