I just finished installing the Buell Race Kit. Ok..well....I had to piece it together from various dealerships because we all know how hard the kits are to get these days. Anyway, the air filter is installed. The Race ECM is in place. And the muffler is on. My question is this: Can I ride the bike to the dealer for the TPS reset? Or do I need to trailer it? I haven't started it yet in anticipation of the possible answers. Thanks! |

Start it up. If it seems to run OK, then I would ride it to the dealer. Just pick a time when you don't have to worry about sitting in traffic on I-5 or 217 (your profile says your are in Aurora OR) Of course I have never installed a race ECM, but if it seems to run ok, it should not hurt anything. |

I rode my bike about a 2 months before I had mine reset. Mine ran fine. However, I have heard others their bike was nearly unrideable after the race kit was installed. |

Mine would not run at all...It would start...idle like crap...touch the throttle...it would just die...I put the stock ecm back in, rode it to the dealer for recall work and had them install the ecm and reset tps. It runs GREAT now! |

Well....I couldn't wait until tomorrow....although I guess it's tomorrow somewhere. It fired up, but won't run. Looks like I'll be trailering it to the dealer for a TPS reset. (Message edited by ray_r on September 24, 2006) |

Why go to the dealer? If you have a laptop or PDA, call up Daves or American Sportbike and order a VDSTS. Al Lighton's instructions are easy to follow to do a TPS reset yourself, and once you use it a few times it pays for itself. |

OK....I'm a willing learner. How easy to follow are the instructions? I guess to guage my mechanical ability, I was able to install the kit myself with no problems. And I can spell PC...so I guess I'm somewhat computer literate. |

Al Lighton from American Sport Bike wrote an excellent set of directions for it. I dare say they are fool-proof. Get the software, it pays for itself. |

Very easy. It took me all of 10 minutes to do and that was taking my time. Read this page for the down and dirty. It is actually less complicated than it seems, but Al Lighton did a very complete write up. http://www.badweatherbikers.com/buell/messages/3842/142751.html |

44mag2 & Ray_r Just read your thread. I have the VDSTS kit, a black (the fast one) XB12x, the race kit installed and time to reset the TPS/AVF for free. Don’t know what the dealer gets but I’m sure it’s not free. Oh, by the way, I live in Lake O. Drop me an email if you want. |

PS. Reset to the AVF and the bike is a new animal. Just got the latest patch for VDSTS and did it to mine. HOLY S$%T!! |

I do mine every couple thousand miles. It is easy to do, and makes the bike run great. |

Anything special to do for the AFV reset? Do I just click on the Air Fuel Value button and then run it at ~3000 rpm down the highway for 10 minutes? Thanks |

I just run it at 3500 for a few minutes, and all is good. I dont think it needs 10 minutes. |

Whitj - Thanks for the offer. But I already have the kit from Al on the way. I'll send you a note if I get stuck during the process and need advice/help. |

No problem Ray_r. You'll love this kit. Works w/ a PDA too. Paochow, run bike in 5th gear steady between 2500~3500 for 3 to 5 minutes. Works like a charm. Be warned, when you reset the AFV and start it for the first time after the reset, it will idle very erratically. You may have to manually hold the throttle until the bike warms up. Once it is up to temp it SHOULD stay idle until you do the 5th gear run. It will continue to idle strange until you complete the 5th gear run. After that, the ecm is set and your on your way. Oh, one other thing. Once it’s set, hang the F**k on. Its was a new bike for me. My seat of the pants dyno was off the chart. The AFV was obviously way off on mine & I did not have a clue. |

Hi Whitj, Just looking for a clarification of your method please. You say "Once it is up to temp it SHOULD stay idle until you do the 5th gear run." I don't have a way to reset the AFV and then immediately do a steady 5th gear run. What happens if you have to go a few miles of a little stop and go before you can do it? Thanks |

Lorazepam & Whitj: Thanks for the help. I'll probably end up loading up the laptop and taking the bike to a freeway rest stop, reseting and then hopping on the freeway. I'd have a hard time doing a steady 3000 rpm in suburbia. |

Well, I gotter done. It certainly took me longer than 10 minutes, but it wasn't too bad. I had a little trouble connecting, but Al's instructions helped me through that. I reset the AFV while I was in there, and based on what I've read here. The only real issue I had through the whole thing was trying to find and adjust the throttle thumb-screw. For those looking, it's that chrome looking knob between the air-scoop and the engine. You can see it from the front of the bike. And I think mine had lock-tite on it or something. It was a real bugger to get moving. But it did indeed loosen up after some effort. And it's held in place with a zip-tie? Seems a bit cheesy. But I guess it does the job. So I took the bike out for a spin. I live in the country, so I was able to do the 3000 rpm thing down my road for 3 min, then had to stop and do it again for 3 min. Then another stop and I was good for about 10 min. I re-adjusted the idle, and all seems well with the world now. That VDSTS kit is a real hoot to play with. I'm amazed at the information the bike communicates with the laptop. I guess I'll get bored with it soon enough, but in the mean time, it's like playing video games against the Uly! Ray r, What is your stored AFV now? (engine off, ignition on) You may need to down load the latest update if your version does not have AFV as a channel. Thanks! Davo |

Davo - I downloaded the latest update before I did the resets. I did not record the stored AFV though. |

Reset my TPS and AFV on a freeway pull off the other day and ran for about 10 min @3200 rpm. Runs nice and strong now, found myself running at under 2000rpm since it now runs very smooth. On a stinky note: Not sure if it is related or not but I have noticed the Uly will smell up the garage with a gas smell after being parked from riding. Is the hot frame causing the gas fumes to vent? Anyone else have similar issues? |

It is probably the fuel residue perking off the muffler after shut down. Not all of the unburned HC's go into the atmosphere some are always saved for the garage. |
