I installed a baker six speed in my 99 S3. Looking for a speedo correction unit like the one in J&P for Harley Davidsons. Does anybody have any experience with this problem and/or correction unit? |

have you checked to see if it is needed? any electronic correction with the correct polarity should work, the buell sensor most likley switches the ground on and off. |

I thought that the baker six speed used the same output sensor and therefore the speedo was still ok even with an overdrive. I thought that was a main selling point. |

I'm so wrong!!! From their page: "Do I need to recalibrate my speedometer? If your bike has a digital odometer, Yes, you will need a recal box when installing a BAKER 6-speed." Sorreee! |

Sorry I had to leave the thread earlier. Karma: looking at the speed sensor, there are 3 wires, on the sensor (red + 12v),(Black ground), (White, signal) these are [gray + 12],[white W1 signal],[black, ground ] the wiring diagram is common between the s3 and the x1. with a multi meter check]{THE red meter lead}on +12[ + battery will do ] to the white wire at the connector for the speed sensor {The BLack meter lead goes here}, when you turn the rear wheel do you see the 12v reading change, if not place the red meter lead on ground and repeat the pickup turns off either 12v or ground to the meters sensing circuit, you must know this to select the correct device. Karma: I did some checking in the CC cat, S&S, Dakota digital, and autometer have correction units, they also list senders one looks alot like a buell sender I think that its unlikely that there will be an issue pick your flavor and hang it on the system. I hope that this helps you.. I will watch this thread if you need any help.. (Message edited by oldog on August 13, 2006) |

Why would you have to correct the speedo? I realize what the page says...BUT... BUT, 5th gear is still 1:1, SO, in effect, all it that happened is adding a 6th gear, which doesnt change the output shaft speed, just the engine speed. Correct, me if I am wrong, but that is the speedo sensor right above the tranny output shaft.... Since that is where the pick up is, there should be NO need to worry about calibrating it. NOW, the best thing I can say is, jump on a highway, get it to indicate 60 mph, adn time it between a couple markers... There can be a couple percent error, as factory speedos are not individually calibrated... I hope this makes sense to people, otehr wise, i will have to try to draw a diagram to explain... BUT, again, IF you arent changing the drive pullies, there is no need to worry about calibrating, especially if you are using the same sensor Chase |

Thanks for the input. Yes I have checked the speedo against my GPS. In sixth 80 MPH is just above 2100 RPM. Sorry I forgot to include the pulley change, 29/55. I was in hope of inputs with experience with the sold devices. This gives some thing to work with. again thanks Joe |

Sorry I forgot to include the pulley change, 29/55. There is your difference...okay, now it makes sense... Hmmmm, lets see what the theoretical top speed is....2100 @ 80 man, that thing should FLY with enough HP...lol Too tired to write everything down, and do the math..maybe tomorrow. Chase} |

Chasespeed Thanks I have spread sheets to do the speed/RPM calculations. I was hoping for some experience with the products on the market. Those gears take a lot out of her considering I weigh about 290. But it cruises real nice. Joe |

Karma, what was the theretical(sp) top speed if the motor pulled to red line? Chase I looked through the manual to see what the speed sensor is picking up, thinking 5th gear assy on the output shaft end? I've never had the tranny out to look at the bearings [ re grease ] what you are saying is correct if the 5th gear assy is the output and is the same size as stock. |

Dog, even if its reading the 5th gear, the gear still maintains the 1:1 ratio, thus, IF he didnt change the pullies, it would still be accurate... as the 5th is a direct drive... Basically, all that changes, IS, IF opted for, the first gear ratio, and it adds an OD gera(6th). I dont have a complete breakdown of where that sensor reads from, BUT, again, with ONLY the addition of that OD gear, and NO other changes(pullies), it would be accurate... Chase |
