I've got an 99 X1 and so far the farthest I've gone in a day is about 350 miles. I haven't really tried any long trips yet. I know there are a few Ironbutt members here that blow that out of the water. For the rest of you, what's a normal distance you can comfortably expect to go on an old school Buell? What model did you ride the distance on and what modifications have you made to make it more comfortable?

Well I just noticed I had a typo in my subject line, but I can't edit that part, so I stuck with it.

my longest ride...2280 miles, left Indy at noon on a friday and got into Lomita, CA on Sunday night. Stopped for sleep in OKC and Gallup, NM. I had a duffle bag strapped to the back seat of my 97 S3, this was in june of 98. Bought the bike a couple of months earlier. Was a lot of fun, but looking back, i wish i knew more about the bike, i had no idea about the recall issues, or anything. just had it serviced and rode!

the only mod...a travel pillow as extra cushion between my thighs. (orig S3 seat, since replaced with 99 style! much better.)

1250 km's, (600 in rain) on a 98 S1. i wouldn't advise doing it with rearsets. ...kinda makes you wish for new knees at the end of the day. i do this every spring before the terrists hit the backroads of BC

sorry i don't have any ideas on the comfort thing, thats an oxymoron when it comes to the S1's anyways.

530 miles in one day on a '98 S-1. I think the only thing that saved me was the Corbin seat I put on the week before.
As for the comfort thing, I've heard of guys wearing bicycle shorts under thier pants. The extra padding is supposed to help.

700 miles, I guess, Rockford, Il. to DuQuoine, Il., and home that night, after the Mile.

'91 RS1200 Pulled a wheelie leaving town, broke the speedo drive, so I rode down and back without it. The worse thing was that the self-canclelling t/signals don't cancel when the speedo's farked.

99 X1 590 in one day... controls wise, was bone stock...

did it again, a little shorter, 550.. Cross Roads bars and rear sets..seemed more comfortable to me..but, could have been the tank bag on the second trip, instead of the back pack..dunno...

Gonna do it again this weekend, MX bars, and stil have the rear sets......

~1000+ miles from my house in Philly to Josh's house outside St. Louis. Should have been under a thou, but I missed an interchange somewhere in OH and had to double back after realizing I was going the wrong way. DOH!
15.5 hours or so. Stock S2, no mods. If I'd known I would miss the merge and add miles to the trip I would have printed out the IB paperwork and made it official.

Nonstop riding, i rode from NJ to Cap's house in TN in one day. 700 miles worth, on my 98 S1W.

Furtherst ride? That would have to be WI for Buell Homecoming 2000 (those were good times...)

We actually rode the whole damn trip in the rain, and it was tiresome. Your body fatigues pretty badly while riding in the rain..always being cold, and never quite warming up. We rode out to somewhere in Ohio before calling it a night, and grabbing a hotel room.

Total ride out there was over 925 miles or so...

And whoever says you can't go long distance riding on a S1W is full of it.

I think my record was just shy of 1100 miles.
Home to Montreal on back roads and then I failed to find my friends up there.
Tooled around town for a bit and gave up.
Drove home via Troy NY.

Funny that a trip through Boston will wear me out faster than a 600 mile cruise.

1130 in one day from somewhere in ariz or n.mexico to my place in Vacaville CA when Ferris and I were coming home from Bratpac and had lost several days to his exhaust repairs. That was on a trip from CA to N.Carolina and back with stops at the Southwest Regional Buell Rally in Taos and a little riding around the Blue Ridge Pway.
And then I drove to San Diego on a tuesday and bought an S-2,serviced it and put on new tires on weds and thursday, rode it back to San Diego to go on the All CA Brag ride criss crossing CA from top to bottom.

Delta,

I did a little over 900 in about 21 hours or so on a reasonably stock 2001 X1 (Rochester NY to Deal's Gap the long way). Back then I was getting 50s for mpg, so I could safely go 200 Miles between stops. I was loaded to the gills with luggage. It was my first big trip, I brought along a massive tool kit just in case

loadedx1

I ended up doing 2200 or so for the week end. All the bike needed was some oil and lots of gas

As to comfort I renamed the stock seat nut crusher on that ride. The bike's not bad for distance. get the ventura pack and you're all set

About 750 miles NYC to Riders Roost, just outside Wilkesboro, NC. I'd of course, as usual, botched my departure and didn't get on the road until 11 am. Rode my '96 S2 with a stock seat modded with a Propad. A good ride all in all.

My main problem riding long distances is that I get tired/sleepy and have to pull off for a 15 minute power nap every so often.

Several 800+ mile days in a row in a meandering route from Milwaukee to Seattle on a '00 M2 several years ago. No comfort mods except a throttle rocker, since replaced with Throttlemeister barends. Did just fine, me and the bike.

If needed or wanted I'd have no issue with riding either the M2 or the '95 S2 as is for another set of those days. I'd probably pack lighter than I did on the Seattle trip though.

And then there's Blake who carries a green sofa with him on his journies.
(remind him to tell you sometime)

Im not quite sure how much milage the day came to but I rode with a bunch of guys from Sport-touring.net for about 10+ hrs. We met in New Hope, PA for breakfast and then rode into Northern New Jersey from there. Sort pit stop from there for lunch. The roads we great! Twisties! Nice! We only stopped to look at a map 2x. It was an awesome day! Just put on a new set of Avons and the bike was handling like a dream. There was a guy that was riding a VFR behind me and he said between the sound of my 99 S3T and the Duc Falco it sounded like "a bike race." I believe I suprised both of the guys I was riding with and neither of them had ever ridden with someone the owned a Buell. They were both impressed.

My S3T is mostly stock with the exception of a Zero Gravity wind screen, V&H Slip-on, and Works Performance rear shock (replaced POS stock shock that failed after the 2nd riding season). The only thing the was hurting me that day was hand from shifting. The seat honestly was pretty good but I think that I still want a different seat the positions me differently. I usually get a little numb when riding for long distances on the slab. Twisties..I'm good because I am moving around a lot.

Now the bike is apart and awaiting parts so that I can register the bike in Delaware. I'm getting the itch now because it is getting warmer...I can't wait...

My longest single day was ~600 miles on my '99 M2 Cyclone with an air seat. It was more than comfortable enough, I could have gone further. Longest total trip was ~1500 miles.

My record is 920 miles the long interesting way from Great Smoky Mountains National Park in Tennessee to Kilgore, Texas. But for enjoyment on an extended journey, I prefer a 250 mile day plus or minus 50 miles depending upon circumstances.

That was on my trusty '97 Cyclone complete with rear-sets and clip-ons.

Uh.....is the instant question "riding intentionally in a known direction"...or does "lost, trying to find California count"?

Approx. 850 in one stretch so far on my S3T, heading home from MMI in Orlando and stopping in Falls Church VA to visit with my father. Did the rest back home to Rahway the next day in the rain.
