Tha AMA Motorcyclist Hall of Fame Museum in Pickerington Ohio, just east by one exit from Reynoldsburg Oh and Brice Rd (BTW:Brice Rd. is hallowed ground to hot rodders and Mopar folk like me.) Thae museum is cool. It's located on the grounds of AMA's national headquarters, which is a beautiful park like setting. Walking through the doors your greeted by a Vincent Black Shadow and a BSA Gold Star Scrambler(Scrambler is what moto-cross was called before it was called moto-cross) tha the AMA is giving away. The upper level was dedicated to the history of Moto-cross with some very interesting machinery in that it was a bunch of companies that most of us had never heard of and I already can't recall. A couple of highlights that stuck in my head from the moto-cross exibit were: When Harley sold it's Italian light weight motorcycle unit, Aeromacci, they sold it to Caviga, which means there's a lineage between Milwaulkee, MV, and Moto-Guzzi?! Another thing is that I didn't know that Swedish manufactuer Husqvarna built dirt bikes. Finally, I got to see a couple examples of my favorite motorcycle manufactures name and logo, Bultaco. Gotta love the big "thumbs up" logo they used. Going down stairs, There was a display dedicated to BMW with some very rare vintage Beemers there. BMW started as an engine manufactuer only and their first full vehicle was a motorcycle. BMW is also responsible for the control layout that all motorcycles use today. Going from the BMW display to the Hall of Fame area there was what is considered to be the first motorcycle. Built by Diamler to test prototype car engines, this contraption was made almost entirely out of wood! It also had training wheels! Moving along, the last display area had a variety of significant race bikes in AMA racings' history. Several road racing bikes from the usual suspects, hill climbers, and flat tracker. A good number Harley KR and XR 750's among the group. The most interesting item thought was the 1970 H-D KR-750 road racer. In that hall was the Wall of Fame which included our favorite engineer/racer/motorcycle mogul-Eric Buell. He was inducted in 2002 and was one of only a few individuals to also have his picture with the plaque. They have him standing next to a white XB9R. Sorry Brankin, no tuber. Other than Craig Vetter's Mystery Machine, The first "production" full fairing sport bike, the Beemers, a '65 FL Pan Head with a gazillion miles on it, and a H-D Sturgis, all of the bikes there were race bikes of some kind. And currently no Buells, though that may change as displays change as most of the bikes on display are on loan from othe museums or private owners. The level of the restorations and the condition of the original bikes is second to none. Well worth the time and money spent, I'd like to go back again during better weather and on the bike as as one could guess, the motorcycle accomodations are second to none. Would it allow the easy installation of Uly brush guards? It was almost midnight before I finished putting it all back together so I haven't tested it yet. A special thanks to Dave, who came over and helped me when I cross-threaded a bolt and broke it in the part. Dave, I found the part for the hand guard, but now I need a pin and cotter pin for the passenger foot peg (I used the original for the riders foot peg). But after staying up till midnight, I woke up a sick child baning on my door at 3:30 am this morning. I think all I'm up for at the moment is a nap. I'm glad you're bike is (almost) fixed. Thats Carols'es bolt I was refering to, just quoting his post. But I have broken them off before, and the next time I do, I'll know who to call. This brings back memories. Once upon a time I had a Mazada pickup. I took the valve cover off the engine just so I could see what was inside. When I was putting it back on, I wrung the top off one of the the cover bolts. I started drilling the bolt out, and broke the drill bit off in the bolt. Then I paid someone to fix it all for me. That was about the point I realized that I'm not a mechanic.   Jlnance Posted on Sunday, January 01, 2006 - 01:28 pm:        Im a welder/Machineist. I just thought of something. Perhaps you have some advice. I have a Blast. At one point the nut holding the header on backed off. I didn't realize this for a while, and the header flange banging on the header studs buggered up the threads. I put new nuts on, but I had to torque them pretty hard since they were going over bad threads. This is bad because the torque specs on those nuts is suposed to be something like 24 inch-pounds to keep from crushing the header gasket. I'm sure that gasket is either too loose or crushed now. It runs, but I worry about it. Any suggestions?   M2nc Posted on Sunday, January 01, 2006 - 06:20 pm:        It's Alive!! It's Alive!! I finally got to ride the Uly for the first time since mid-November. The bike ran beautifully. Dave and I had a great ride to Oriental where we drew allot of attention and had a good talk with someone from the Durham area that has an older Goldwing. He is looking to buy a Uly. He says he rides to Michael's often so we may run into him again one day there. I'm all grins and the bike still looks good. You have to look hard to see any signs of the slide Of course I did not have the Hard Bags on. The left bag will sure tell the tale. A great day to ride.   Jlnance Posted on Sunday, January 01, 2006 - 07:38 pm:        The doorbell rang this afternoon. My daughter went to get it and then hollers back "Dad, it's the police." It is difficult to concive of a situation where having the police at your door is a good thing. I answered the door and heard: "Good afternoon Mr Nance, do you know where your car is?" I'd left it in front of Ray Price when I went to pick the Uly up yesterday afternoon. I was going to pick it back up today when I could get a ride. Apparently someone broke into it last night. They had obviously been inside the car, but as far as I can tell they didn't take anything. Not even the change sitting between the seats. Oh well. Happened to numerous employees and customers. I can see from the pic that you were parked in the street, I'm assuming you were parked closer to the service department. It's more common for cars parked further down the street. Cars parked in the front lot under the lights seem to be less likely to be broken into.   1313 Posted on Sunday, January 01, 2006 - 10:36 pm:        Hello All, I got back yesterday and amazingly it was the first time in the last 3 plane trips that I took that my luggage actually arrived with me! Will wonders never cease? I spent all day relaxing and all evening 'catching up' on badweb. Based on the content on badweb changing in the winter months, it's amazing what the people that live in colder climates go through every winter - and thank God I don't have to deal with that crap anymore (well I did last Friday night as we were going out for a fish fry and the snow decided to fall - nothing major, just a quick 2" snowfall, that didn't disrupt my travel plans for early Saturday). I rode a little bit today just to do some grocery shopping, although it would have been good to have ridden some more. Since I got tomorrow off, hopefully the rain will stay away long enough to get out and do some riding. Webethumpin, Welcome to our corner of the badweb. I'm glad you found the location before I had to resort to other means. Jlnance, Some shitballs back home had broke into my hearse and stole the stereo and speakers (but left the amp) many moons ago when I was living in Wisconsin (while I was still in college if I remember correctly). It's a PITA, for sure. You know what my second thought after reading your post was? Whoever busted the window is trying to tell you that you don't need a car. If it were a motorcycle, they wouldn't have needed to break any window, so the incident wouldn't have happened if a motorcycle was sitting there. It sure is strange they didn't take anything, though. As for your ? about the exhaust studs on your Blast... Instead of the long diatribe I was writing about torque spec vs. clamp load and personal experiences with failed exhaust studs, my simple recommendation is to take a 5/16-24 die and clean up the threads on the stud (if the cylinder head does not interfere with the die) and replace the nut from that stud with a new one. If that doesn't suffice, then I will have to reformulate my diatribe. As for the squished gasket, (I think they are the same as used on the tubers) they should be replaced periodically - perhaps the next time the header is removed would be a good time. 1313   Webethumpin Posted on Sunday, January 01, 2006 - 10:41 pm:        Jim,The studs are replaceable.As long as you have no leaks,no harm done.Just keep an eye on it. To replace a stud put 2 nuts on the stud and tighten the nuts together, this is called a Jam nut.Place the open end wrench on the bottom nut and it will back right out,it may help to put a little heat on head where the bolt screws in before you try to unloosen them.Any problems or Questions drop dave or myself a message. Late WeBe   Webethumpin Posted on Sunday, January 01, 2006 - 11:16 pm:        Oh yea,John and I convoyed my wife riding her blast on one of our favorite local road trips today.She rode apx.220 miles today ,the longest one day trip yet.She looked like a pro,all I could see in my mirror was that big round headlight on the blast.LOL We rode the Minnesott Ferry and it was beautiful,water slick as glass,bright orange and blue skies almost reflecting Harley and Buell colors. My depth perception was off bad from the Ferry to Greenville.For some reason I thought we would make it before dark cold.Huha nope.The Blast needed fuel so we all filled up in Grimesland.Since we were close to Hooters what a great place to warm up ,and hay we can eat there too. The wife didnt mind.She was cold too. After 220 miles, she should be a lot more confident. Does she ever post on this board? What made you decide to get her a Blast? I'd never heard of them before I took the Riders Edge class. When I returned from Iraq last year she decided to learn to ride.After 17 years of riding I decided to take the riders edge with her.Wish I had took the course 17tears ago. She failed the course the time we took it together but she was determined to ride.Ray Price offered her a one on one instructions with an instructor in order to recycle to another class.She passed with flying colors The first time she rode the blast in the course the bike fit her and she felt she could handle it no matter what.She built confidence fast. Early November I had the 10k mile service done on my Dyna at Sheltons HD.Went to pick up my bike and ran across a 2000 Blast with 3400 miles, and looked as new as a 06. Salesman told me what the out the door price was, told him to hold it and picked it up within a few days. The rest is history,and I love to ride it too,but I have to ask first. She may post in the future,but she is real busy with school(ECU)and rides when she can I try get her to ride at least 1-2 days a week for as long as time will allow her to. until next time Later WeBe   Jlnance Posted on Monday, January 02, 2006 - 12:04 pm:        After 17 years of riding I decided to take the riders edge with her. Wish I had took the course 17 years ago. I'm not even sure that course existed 17 years ago. I've always been glad I took it. My first time was about 18 months ago, then I took it again in June with my girlfriend. Still learned stuff the second time around. I was talking to a neighbor at a Christmas party recently. She was telling my that her husband used to have a motorcycle. It was a 600cc Japanese bike. He wrecked it driving it home from the dealer when he bought it. And a couple more times. I asked if he had taken the class. She laughed "Oh no, he would never take a class." On one hand, you have to admire the guts it takes to just jump on a motorcycle you have no idea how to ride and take off. But I'm way to cautious (chicken?) to do that. I can't imagine how long it would take me to learn all that stuff on my own. Or how many wrecks it would require.
