I just signed up for a ButtLite IV road rally that's to be held in August of '06. (www.teamstrange.com) The rally is a 7 day event that is similar to the famous IronButt rally. Get a list of bonus points, plot your route, get receipts and return to a designated checkpoint in a specific timeframe. Winner is the rider with the most points. Simple in theory, difficult to achieve. In reading past ride reports, I can expect to put on 7,000 - 8,000+ miles in the 7 day period. (Ouch, I'm feeling the pain already.) My Uly will have a set of Motolights, a GPS, tank bag, CeeBaileys 6" windscreen. That's about it except for a addition of a Fuel Cell. I'm thinking of a 3-4 gallon tank. Now for the question: How do I hook-up the aux. fuel line to the frame tank? Any ideas? I would like to feed the frame directly. I'm thinking of modifying a gas cap to include a aux. fuel line. Or connect the aux fuel line to the vent overflow connection? I don't think I should mess with cutting the fuel line to the fuel injectors. Any thoughts would be appreciated. I'll be running against experienced IronButt riders on BMW's, Wings, etc. I would like to put in a good show on the Ulysses. Always ready for a challenge. Thanks, Bob |

There was an Ulysses with a fuel cell at the Seattle Motorcycle show this past weekend. The 60-some year old owner plans to go from Prudhoe Bay to Tierra del Fuego next year. It was a pretty clean installation. The fuel cell was mounted on a platform a couple inches over the rear of the seat and bolted to the tail section. (I didn't get a picture.) The bike was one of 40 local bikes at the www.SoundRider.com display. I'll see if I can get contact info for the owner. |

I'd appreciate it, anything would help. I looked at that ride he's attempting. Now that's crazy. |

I am installing a 3-gallon fuel cell on my Ulysses. I will probably plumb it into the fuel tank drain plug made in to the bottom of the fuel pump. I am studying on using a banjo style fitting in place of the drain. I am also planning on using an electric fuel solenoid to turn it off and on (with a relay and the passing light switch). Hopefully I will be able to make it quick disconnect so I can still use my top box on trips with my wife. Have all the pieces I just need to take the time and get it done. Loveall |

Loveall13, found some quick dis/connects at www.tourtank.com. Might get their tank set-up ,too. Where did you get your 3-gal tank? I have a 5 gal from my Road Glide, but I think that's an over kill for the Uly. Bomber,---pop smoke--- haven't heard that term in about 35 yrs now. (Flash back time.) Only thing I pop now is an occasional beer. I still have to order most of the hardware for the set-up, but thanks for the helping hand offer. I'll put you on stand by. |

Whoa, I was into it until I saw that the '02 ride ended at a nudist resort. |

As I posted earlier that was my Ulysses in the SEA bike show with a number of modifications including an aux fuel tank, hid lighting, Happy-Trails Pannier System, Garmin 276 mount, V1 mount, Metzler 880's, C Bailey's +6", and a heated clothing controller. I have a little experience in the LD and Iron Butt world both in riding and in building Long distance bikes and would be happy to help and share if requested. regards ref |

Lowflyer, TeamStrange holds some of the best events that I've ever attended. There's always weird twists that do not always seem funny at the time. Yeah, that nudist resort (clothing optional) as the final checkpoint was definitely different. But wierdly funny at the same time. Their rides are never the same, so I don't expect a repeat of the last event. Bison, I'm sorry I missed your last post. I'm going to look for it now. If you don't mind repeating it, I'd appreciate it. I'm mostly interested in the fuel line hook up. How did you feed the aux cell line to the frame? Or to some other place? Also why did you replace the stock tires with Metzler 880's? Longevity of the stock tires? Very interested, Bob |

Bison, I just bought a Ulysses last Saturday, and I'd love to hear what modifications you've done and how you did them. Thanks in advance. |

I definitely 'get' the wierdly funny theme. The ride sounds like it would be an absolute scream. I just know what my a$$ would look like after 8k miles, and I would not be real eager to look at it myself, much less show it to strangers. |

Bison, I saw your bike at the show last weekend. I agree with your profile about Dalton and Dempster being two of the greatest roads. I did both in '03 and the Dalton in '92. You're from Alberta. Have you been up to Yellowknife? I'm thinking of riding the Mackenzie Hwy next year: 35 north to Yellowknife then Hwy 7 to Fort Nelson. Is it worth it? |

Bison, you still out there? Any advice on installation of that fuel cell? |

Bienhoabob I am not able to respond on a daily basis, sorry.I have plumbed 4 aux tank systems to date and believe in the KISS principle, so gravity feed with a manual valve is my method. On the Ulysses I used the fuel drain plug for my entry point. Tapped the hole to 1/8th NPT.and used a 90 deg 1/8th to 5/16 hose barb fitting. I can then use a 1/8th NPT plug to revert to almost stock. As for the 880's you answered the question. I have in the vicinity of 150000 miles on 880's on mostly BMW's and they have proven to be the best available for long distance riding. They are good in the wet, last the longest, and are good enough for reasonable cornering particularly in the radial version that I put on the Ulysses. Of course these are only my opinions based on my experience Crusty Don't know what you wish further than the list of changes so far as posted above. If you wish details about anything in particular I will try to help. regards ref |

Thanks Bob and Bison. I am sorry it took me so long to get back. I fixed my slow running computer all by myself (it only took the tech lady 3 hours to fix all my damage). I have been studying on this for quite a while. I am using a 3-gallon cell made out of aluminum from RCI (I believe). It is tall and narrow with the foam to help calm down the slosh. I was wondering if you had to modify the factory vent to allow the gas to flow in to the frame/tank. I spoke with a friend at Holley today and he is going to bring a solenoid by for me to try. Thanks again for all the help. Jeremy (Message edited by loveall13 on December 09, 2005) (Message edited by loveall13 on December 09, 2005) |

One more question. Since I haven't purchased a service manual yet, where is the fuel drain plug located? |

The back of the main frame on the left side just in front of the swing arm. Looks like a square with 4 bolts holding to the frame, it has a fitting with high pressure hose on the top and a plug just below it, that is the drain. Jeremy |

I'm planning a trip to Yellowknife next summer and there's at least one spot where I will want a little more range than I can comfortably get with the stock Uly. I've been seriously considering a fuel cell but will rarely need it except for this trip. On a trip to Prudhoe Bay 2 years ago I used a small gas can but it was bulky. I've found these ATV cans from Kolpin. http://secure.mycart.net/catalogs/index.asp?category=264979&count=1 Using their bracket it looks like I could attach the "Jr" model to the flip tail when it's vertical. It wouldn't take much space and would leave room for my tail bag. It seems like this will work well for me. Anyone have experience with Kolpin products? They leak? |
