I just bought my first Buell Lightning 2005. I got a broken stud on the rear cylinder, apparently from the factory according to the dealership. I also lost the front 2 header nuts on the front cylinder and broke the muffler front strap. That was riding to the dealer for the first 1000 miles service. I got the bike back a week ago and, coming back from today's ride I lost one of the header nuts at the front cylinder and broke the muffler front retaining strap. Since I ride "extremely hard", are there any heavy duty straps and better header nuts for the XB12S?

There has to be more to the story then that. This was a problem on the tubers before the new front exhaust mount (with better bushings) was released, but the XB's have been solid as can be.

Maybe it was a freak failure of that one stud, and from there things just cascaded. That would explain the first failure.

But the second failure? No way. Are you sure it did not happen the other way around? Could the strap have broken first? Maybe the dealer grabbed the wrong one off the bench and accidentally reused an old one instead of putting on a new one.

Don't screw around with this... loosing that front strap is a good way to become a pole vaulter.

BUELLers:

Have a 97S3T with 84,841.1 miles as of the last ride ...

Have never had a "BROKEN" STUD,exhaust port PN 16715-83 ...

The SECRET is in HOW YOU INSTALL the EXHAUST SYSTEM !!!

Did you update the front mount LaFayette? Or is that the original "ear chewing" model?

Herve:

E-mail me the VIN and the details. I didn't realize there were any Buell running around Saudi Arabia and it sounds like your bike has broken more parts that all the other XB's combined.

I'm with Bill. . . there's got to be more to this, something sounds too fishy.

What is the best method to remove the broken studs? I hate the thought of my hand drill slipping and ruining the head and I have heard lots of horror stories about broken easy outs.

Thanks

Dave

See the other thread currently on this topic...

Jims makes a drill guide tool that looks expensive until you consider doing it any other way. Then all of a sudden $70 for a plate and a drill bit looks like the best money you ever spent.

You are right, do NOT go the easy out route.

Oh, yeah...a big second to reepicheeps, " do NOT go the easy out route". Get the jig..Been there, done that and never going back. Would spend $140 for a jig, if I had to do it again.
