WOW............WOW.........WELL...........WOW..!!!! All I can say about the weekend....(well...almost!) Sparky , once again your route ROCKED!!!Fernwood has the most 1st gear turns I've ever seen...OK , ALL of them were first gear turns..almost nailed that tire biting Dog that went for Victors tire....Great time, great friends and the desert was NEVER more pleasent, even the wind didn't hurt. Actually I think it helped disburse the sparks of the Burnin'Buellin' Man and numerous random bottle rocket blasts randomly propelling past photo taking desert madmen!...(Reindoggy can move FAST!!)...(credit to M2krew 4 that Desert Madmen one)...Denise..Really wish you were there, next time we'll have a desert meet and hijack you to the very spot. And ply you with multitudes of spirits in the true desert style!!!And Joanne...incredible job on Buellin' Man!!!My hats off to you!.. Scott...if it wern't for your generosity and time a LOT more people wouldn't have been SO comfortable.Laurie , you ROCK!!and all the new people I got to meet...Had the best time with you'all and this just proves...EVERYTHING goes better with a BUELL!!....But of course last but FAR from least Ferris......what can be said?....I now have 2 brothers in my life. This life has NEVER been more cool or exciting , you two.......Just can't wait for OKTOBERFAST..!!!!!!!!Ride to ROOST my friend!!!Thanx ALL!! |

Ferris-Watch Update: Ferris and Madduck's trusty Uly left Santa Barbara just before 8am this morning headed North. The Buelling Man entourage arrived a tad or two late to the Rock Store, so we scrapped the initial Lots-O-Twisties route and instead opted for a fun jaunt down Mulholland Drive and a sunset ride along the Pacific Ocean up to Santa Barbara. Yes, Ferris got the Uly stuck in the sand on the beach in search of a killer photo op. I'm not sure if they make a paddle tire in that size! We got him out of there, which was actually quite easy after Ferris decided to put the bike into neutral. Ride, Ferris. Ride. Jim in Santa Barbara |

Can YOU flat-foot a Uly (both sides?) without straightening out your legs? This guy can...

Jim, So what did you think of the "low" seat on the Uly?? |

Excellent question Paul.... I'm not sure how to answer that. Some thoughts... 1. I could definitely ride a Uly with that seat. On a level surface (in my garage last night) with my street riding boots on (SIDI with very thin soles) I could get toes down on both sides simultaneously and be quite stable. In the less than level parking lot of the Rock Store I was very concerned about my reach on the low side but managed it okay. 2. By sliding my hips a half inch to one side or the other I can easily flat-foot one side without any uncomfortable lean angle. 3. The seat appears very comfortable for a long day of riding. 4. On a gravel road or any unlevel surface I would be very careful about where I stopped the bike. I suspect Ferris had the rear pre-load cranked up a little bit, because the reach did not seem appreciably lower (to me) than the stock seat I tried at Ventura HD / Buell (pre-load on that bike was in the middle of the range). I visually looked at the pre-load and did not see many of the index marks showing. I don't know where it's supposed to be set. I think the low seat still splayed my legs out too much. My DRZ400S advertises a 36.8" seat height, but the stock seat is quite narrow enabling my legs to actually reach better than they do on the Uly! I just picked up a Corbin seat for the DRZ (for comfort, not for reach, the stock DRZ seat is a 4x4). The Corbin's DRZ design is excellent, it is very narrow at the front (like the stocker) allowing your legs to go straight down but rapidly tapers back to a width that is much wider than the stock seat for far greater comfort while in the saddle. The Corbin is at least an inch or two lower than the stock DRZ seat which is an added bonus. My conclusion? I could make the pre-production Buell low seat work, but I would *always* have to be very conscious of exactly where I stop the bike, something I don't have to do now with my S2 or the DRZ. So I think before spending $$$ on the Buell low seat I would wait and see what Corbin can do. Ideally I'd like to have the balls of both feet down simultaneously. As a reference I'm a little taller than Ferris, and he handles the Uly well, but you can see that he is *thinking* about what he's doing when he stops the bike. Regards, Jim in Santa Barbara |

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- For those that don't know, Joe Boyd was one of motorcyclings finest folks. The last ride I went on with him was to Julian. Thanks for bringing back some super memories. . . it's been about 10 years ago and I'm not sure Denise didn't snap the photo! Time flies. . . Court: Boy, does that bring back memories, even though I wasn't there! Can you does a right-to-left ID? |

Great pics! Darn those CHP quota machines. Sorry Sparky. Had a great time in Octatillo Wells. It was such a fast trip down there and back it seems like a dream. I have never broken camp so fast! Al Lighten was the official "countdown" clock, herding the troops to try to get out of camp on time, at 8:00am! Ebear and Al, thanks for the thanks. But actually, I think it really should be the other way around. If anyone could have told me where my life would go AFTER buying my 2000 S3T, I would have told them it could not be true! It could not be true that I would meet such good people who are now friends, and that I would have so much fun that just doesn't end! Not fun like you might have at a bar, but fun with people you want to be with, and who you admire. And thanks to Ferris and Denise, it starts again in three weeks. Ferris isn't even home yet from this trip, and Oktoberfast hits the road the end of the month! And there I will see more friends...Dino, his wife, Unibear, and on and on. So, THANKS! And I might add, a BIG THANKS to JoAnne and Laurie. They had so much stuff in that truck Zack had to compete for space! |

Wow! What an experience. I want to thank everyone involved in pulling this thing off. You guys rock. Where do I begin? I hooked up with the intrepid Ferris at Nellis AFB after an uneventful ride from San Bernardino to Vegas. I got in about 9:30pm Thursday evening and was met at the visitors center by Josh and FMJ who promptly escorted me to the presence of the Great Ferris Bueller. After a couple of brats and burgers we retired to the room for some (very little) shut-eye. Bright and early Friday morning we grabbed some grub and left Las vegas over some of the most desolate and beautiful roads I have ever ridden on. We made a stop at Badwater Basin. At 282 ft. below sea level it is the lowest point in the U.S. Then on into Furnace Creek for lunch where we hooked up with Unibear. From there we headed for Lone Pine where we met a very special addition to our entourage.(Again, Ferris's story to tell) Then to Whitney Portal for a photo op. Next stop: Thunderdome. What an incredible place. Ferris and Denise, I want to thank you once again for sharing your home with us and for your gracious hospitality. You guys are one in a million. More later. It's past my bedtime. |

More from B"Uly"ing Man! As you saw above, the campsite was nice... (Flush toilets, showers, covered camp areas etc.) Here's Al at his camp... and FB plays The Ladies make preparations for B"Uly"ing Man. and FB discovers the Uly's attributes in the sand. RIDE TO ROOST! Take a mental note of that hill in the background... Ferris celebrates! Photo OP? Upon FB's returning from frolic, Al says in jest, "Go up there, I'll take a picture of ya'." Little did he know he'd do it! Off he goes!!! Like Al said, much respect was gained for the Uly's off road abilities at Ocotillo! There were dirt bike riders all around us. They fell silent... I think they were in disbelief! FB you're my HERO! Going, down? FB celebrates again. We all settled in for some dinner, suds, and just plain ol' good conversation among old and new friends... But there's more... |

Chauly, Was just talking with Russ re the IDs - best my brain cells can do: Mark Drake, unknown (purple shirt) though Russ is pretty sure he was a CISsie, Chris Schlieter, Mark Ueeck, Court Canfield, Josef Boyd, Russ Madsen, lady unknown. PS - per Russ: Court, you look too much like a kid in a candy store btw. 8-) |

Paul- I can put both feet flat on the stock seat (but then I can straddle a yardstick too). I didn't sit on yours though so I can't say about the seat. By the way, I'm riding up to Park Rapids on Saturday to visit my parents at their cabin, if you are interested. Scott- That's what I was telling my wife last night when I was showing her pics from Octoberfast 2004. She is just amazed about how we all converse here and then get together. I told here that when we finally meet up that it is like we know each other well. I'm trying to get her to take a week off and come out to California next month. |

Ocotillo Wells is an awesome place! We were at just one of around 4 camping areas. It is run by the State, is free, and all legal. Imagine being on a dirt bike and not worrying about a Ranger looking over your should, or worrying about signs and warnings. This is truly the "open range" of dirt bike and other off road vehicle areas. Ferris easily accomplished what dirt bikers do, only he did it on a Buell! |

Hi Scott, your enthusiasm for the Uly is admirable but honestly it's not a dirt bike. And while Ferris may have made it look easy there's no shortage of skill involved in getting a big bike like that up a steep (and soft in spots) trail without knobbies. If I had been there watching I would've thought to myself "That guy has some huevos grande". Regards, Jim in Santa Barbara |

Both Jerry and Denise have Grande Huevos (Denice's in the figurative sense of course, Jerry maybe literally, I don't know...). This was proven to me on a very long section of VERY technical twisty roads in Northern AZ over the course of three days during the AZ Springfast ride. NEVER underestimate the capabilities of a 2-up FJR1300 w/ a capable pilot and co-pilot. The display I saw over a particular 75 or so mile stretch would make absolute FUN of nearly everyone I've ever watched pilot any bike. Ruben and I (he was on a Tuono), for about 40 miles, were treated to one of the finest displays of cycle riding skill we are likely to ever see. Not a wiggle to be seen on one of the most technical and dirty roads I've ever ridden in anger. Jerry waved both Ruben and I by after about 35 miles or so and we looked at each other and both thought... "You go..." "No, you go...". Ruben finally went by and I staid behind Jerry because quite frankly, I had experienced enough of a high speed run on the Devil's Highway. |

If I had been there watching I would've thought to myself "That guy has some huevos grande". That is precisely what everyone WAS thinking and saying at the time, including Scott No one is saying that the XB12X IS a dirt bike. But Biffless Bueller showed us that it CAN go to dirty places that my S3T wouldn't even think of. Personally, I'll leave that kind of hill climb for my Honda XR400. No one want to drop an $11.5K "dirtbike". |

I'd said to Ferris "go up there and I'll take your picture". I didn't think he'd do it, I was just kidding. But he lept on and was gone in a flash. I'd go up that hill without a second thought on my XR400, but there was no way I was taking MY Uly up that hill. The next day I did take it over close to it and thru a bunch of the whoops partially up it, and it was a lot easier than I expected it to be. But I didn't get to the steeper stuff near the top. The desert is pretty baked right now, and there aren't a lot of dirt bikers out there grinding the hard pack to sand yet, so it isn't as loose as it usually is. But for non-dirt biker, Ferris did pretty darned good getting up that hill. The whole time he was doing it, I was saying "he's going down". Al |
