Blake, you are correct I did leave out the need for the 12 header, my bad, I missed that on the reread as well. As to the dyno chart, I thought it was posted here on Badweb just after I got on here, I was looking at the possibility of putting the 1425cc (88" ) kit on my 12, going based simply off the listing of the bigbore kit on the 9 with the 12 intake and exhaust gear, and either a Drummer or another modified exhaust canister. IF someone pulls out a dyno with that info attached to someone who shall remain nameless, I will retract my statement. I was just so impressed on how much power it bumped up the 9, it really got me drooling over it for a 12, but didn't want to commit that kind of money without seeing a 12 outfitted first.

As to my bike, I don't worry about it tagging the rev limiter anymore, I just don't ride it at that end. Don't need to, I can hit the ground hard enough at 5k : D

Pretty much everything right now seems to be left open, we can toss Ebay prices around until we are blue in the face, no one controls the stupidity of the bidding on ebay except the buyers. I know locally the wreckers here won't sell an XB engine for less then $3000 complete. Same with a couple of the yards I called in Cali. I honestly do not know what the factory price for a complete with FI(minus the harness). And your right, my XB9 is a great example of a wrecked bike that went for less the $3K, yet it needs $1000 in parts and labor to make it useable in an XB frame. Its going into my S3 frame instead since I have talked to a couple of fabricators that can make me a motorplate that will safely bolt to the remaining firm points on the back of the XB engine and bolt to the motorplate/swingarm assembly of the S3.

Blake, I would very much like to add, that one of these days, you and I are going to sit down over a brew and do some serious bench racing. It was very enlightening to do with American Sport Bike Al, and a few others around here, it would be just as enlightening with you.

The only 1170cc conversion I've seen of an XB9R was by NRHS and it made right at 100rwhp.

Found it.. September 7, 2003 in the KV's Dyno Charts topic...

http://www.badweatherbikers.com/cgibin/discus/show.cgi?tpc=3842&post=191326#POST 191326

That's the only "1200cc" XB9 big bore I've seen and it also made use of the Force exhaust and a Power Commander module, and some throttle body and head work.

If there is another/better result out there somewhere, I'd sure like to see it. Cause that result was pretty disappointing. Like you, I was expecting a lot better result with the higher revingoversquare configuration.

Wow. Sounds like over 120hp, and that's for stock ducs & 51's. If you've got the cash, you can get there. Sounds like you've got a decent plan with the huge motor, but you can probably build it up from what you've got. For that much power, you might at least want to consider polishing & shot-peening the stock rods, if not non-stock rods.

try the guys racing them, they should be able to help, Hogan Brothers were pretty friendly at Daytona. I think for the amount of mods, a race team should build it, my 2cents.

been to the sites that offer performance upgrades. all they list is the 1170 upgrade for the 9.(they make it look thats as big as u can go)thats what got me started with the idea of getting a 12 motor.really wish i knew more about the v-twin in my xb.but im better with car motors lol. but i will learn.would rather use my motor and save some money.but if im gonna invest over 4,000,want to do it right the first time.

Like I posted above Chickentoter... to upgrade to the big bore 1170cc in your XB9, the cases need to be split in order to bore the cases to accept the larger diameter cylinder spigots. If you are going that far, you might as well have the shop put in an XB12 crankshaft too; then you'll have the option of going all the way to 90" (1474cc).

If you don't want to take the hit of having to split and machine the cases, then you have only two options, the 1150cc kit for the XB9 or an XB12 engine with the option of a 1250cc kit.

Or... Hillbilly-Motors sells a turbo kit... http://www.hillbilly-motors.com/html/xb9turbo.html

My racebike is the 1169 - cases have to be bored out to take the big jugs. There's hardly any metal left between the cylinders. Lightened and balanced the flywheel and moving parts. Set redline to 7800 but bump it to 8000 for dyno runs.

I did NOT run the compression over 10.5 figuring I can't use all the power it has anyways and like the reliability. 585 cams and stage III heads. Jim's hydrosolids, roller rockers, adjustable pushrods. (I'm racing on a budget and can't afford more than a couple rebuilds a year - not one a month that'd be needed if I tried for 115 HP out of the motor)

Bike does right around 100 HP (depending on which dyno)

This is a pretty standard F-USA work-up though if somebody else was paying for motor rebuilds, I'd bump the compression up.

All that being said, I like this motor better than the XB12 because of the quicker revving, and higher redline. Again, I don't think I can use any more HP until I get more skill.

It sure revs up QUICK!!!

(gotta run, packing for LAGUNA SECA!!! - WOOOOieeee!!)

I now have a XB12R and use to have a XB9R pretty much stock motor with a few accessories. I could hang with just about anyone in the mountains riding up against some of the big boys on R1's Rc51s and 1000RR and many more of the liter bikes with my old 9' Some of the riders have rode with Wera and Sportman club level racing. Some people say I was faster on the 9' than my 12' I'm still riding with a blood clot and still trying to heel old wounds from last sept. Its nice to have the power of the 12'always nicer to have more POWER. Its all about what YOU can do with your bike. If you like running that strait line stuff more power is a must to compete with the Inlines and the other V-twins. I'm about the twisties but I'm a little twisted myself. I love smoking the bigger liter bikes with my stock bike. Thats when I get smoked by a 600' but there is always someone FASTER! I just love to ride and have a good time. I short of all that its all about what YOU want! The 1050 kit from Nallin isn't bad for the price with a few more add ons don't hurt. Its 3:30 a.m Its been fun Ride safe! Slaughter, nice motor! Your comment on rebuilds per month is interesting. There are lots of postings in the Knowledge Vault of Buells making stupid power, mostly 88" motors. It seems like more HP can be put into a street motor (where, perhaps, its not used quite as often) than can safely be put in the race motors.

I wonder what secrets are inside the Hal's FX bikes. The old RRW article kind of laid the specs on the table, but I doubt it was the "whole story".

We built a 1169ccm TS engine (3.125/3.8125) making 120 rwhp for Hillbilly-Motors-Motors.
It uses Revolution Performance cylinders and pistons.
And for sure a set of my race style TS heads.

I have an 03 9r that Hal's made into a 1250. With a Jardine pipe, race ecm, K&N. I have the dyno sheet around here somewhere, 99.7 rwhp, 86 fp( could be wrong on the torque) that is on their run. I intend to take it back to the dyno soon. I added a 12 airbox cover and "tank" cover with vents. I am curious what difference it will make. Besides which I would like to verify the dyno run with my own eyes.
Even at about 100 hp I'm looking at a gain of 16fp and at least 7 hp. looking at the "claimed" 05 specs real world is usually closer to 85 for a factory 9 right? Using that number I'm up almost 15hp. Of course I hope to see more, but that's nothing to sneeze at. especially when the factory 12's I've seen run around 91-94 rwhp.

Just got in late from Laguna (spectating and pitting for Scott Jensen in SBK - I was NOT racing!!) - wanna make one quick comment about the same power from a race motor v. a street motor - the race motor capable of 100HP is going to actually be RUN much longer at a higher percentage of the available power than the same street motor with the same specs. A street motor putting out 100 HP will probably only see that power once a month (depending on the squidliness of the rider) but the same motor in a racebike and on a track will see that power many dozens of times in a single day of practice, warmups and a few races.

Big difference between the motor being used on the street where you rarely if ever need the power and on a track where you can really USE it.

That's why a race motor built the same as a "tweaked" street motor just isn't gonna last. My race motor is maaaaybe 100HP when fresh and can still run pump gas but it comes at a price because its max power is at higher RPMs and redline is bumped up to 8000

YMMV

Hey - don't anybody go dissing Nallin.

ALL my engine jewlery was purchased from them through Glendale HD/Buell.

I could get more HP with a couple tweaks but am very satisfied with throttle response and mid/top end "pull". The bike is still better than I am.

The reason my bike "only" makes 100 HP may be due to Bartels dyno being kinda iffy on calibration - besides we were doing tuning for exhaust gas readings and taking the power wherever it ended up. Also I'm keeping the compression ratio pretty mild.

To clarify, no one is dissing anyone. I've not seen any dyno anywhere where a big bore XB9 (1170cc) has made more than 100 SAE RWHP.

Sam,
Was great to meet you at Laguna Seca. I'm still horse from all the cheering for my favorite racers. As to your engine, let's please clarify... you are running an 88" (1440cc) displacement with the XB12 crank/stroke right?

I removed the post by Nrhs as it included what I deem a dishonest disingenuous attack and frankly I'm sick and tired of it. BadWeB will not be exploited for the waging personal vendettas.

Nrhs, if you have a better XB9 1170cc big bore result, then you are free to post it. If not, and you have nothing positive to add, then please refrain from posting.

Funny how that only seems to work one way around with you Blake. Do as Blake says, not as Blake does. Just because we don't sponsor the board anymore because of your actions, doesn't mean we'll refrain from defending ourselves when you try to cast us in an unfavorable light. The products you're bashing to further a current sponsor's cause helped pay the Badweb bills for years, so show a little gratitude.

Hey Sam,
Glad to hear the bike ran so well on your trip, we would have expected nothing less.

Later,

I did not see what Blake did as an attack.. He said "To clarify, no one is dissing anyone. I've not seen any dyno anywhere where a big bore XB9 (1170cc) has made more than 100 SAE RWHP"

What followed by nrhs could have been seen as a attack by people who could put two and two together and know who he was reffering to.

Blake has a hard job keeping this board together.
If you have better dynos post them, if not
move on.
