I am new to the world of Buell. Recently bought my S3T with 3500 miles on it...bone stock. It is my Daily Driver so I want to let it breathe a little better. I have been searching (both internet and this board) with little success as to the options available for my bike. I don't (CAN'T) spend a whole lot (under $300 if possible)...don't want to cause any issues with other things, mostly just want a BETTER sound and if possible some performance... Thanks in advance. And if there is something I missed, please direct me there. Thanks again...Jason |

You need an aftermarket exhaust and probably a Forcewinder intake. For what you quoted about all you'll be able to afford is the exhaust. Someone has the obsolete SuperTrapp exhaust [eBay Item #4550732614] on eBay for $279.00 [brand new but if someone bids against you it'll be more]. The main thing about the Forcewinder is that if you're caught in a gully washer, watch out! You'll suck in some rain water into your motor. Good Luck KK |

the other thing instead of the forcewinder is just to get the K&N filter that goes inside the "breadbox" and leave it at that. The filter, the exhaust and the RaceECM (the ignition computer) are about all you need. If you can't find a Race ECM then the TFI box of the Power Commander are good options along with the stock ECM. |

I agree with using the breadbox - check the archives in the Knowledge Vault for all sorts of mods you can make to the stock airbox for relatively little (or no) expense. The stock box actually breathes quite well, that's why it's so big. You can get away with cutting open the rear of the stock muffler, modifying it for more sound, and rewelding it back together instead of getting a slip-on. I'd spend most of my money on the race ECM. |

I'd do the air cleaner (K&N plus a $.95 Sportster venturi) and the Race ECM then save your pennies and watch for a pro-series/race header and the pro-series/race muffler. |

Yep, start with the race ECM before you get a muffler because it will run like crap with just a free flowing muffler and stock ECM |

So I spent about an hour yesterday talking to the service manager at HD/Buell dealer. He used to own a 02 s3t...same as mine...he suggested teh PC3 (Plus dyno tuning), V&H slip on, the race IGNITION, and airbox mods...sounds like a whole lot of $$$$$$$$.... I can get a brand new V&H slip on for cost (dealer wants to get rid of it). If I also et the race ECM and gut the airbox is that going to be enough??? What other problems am I going to face??? Should I also get the race ignition??? AAAAHHHHHGGGGG....things were so much easier on my carbed bikes.... |

The "Race ignition" is also the fuel injection computer (ECM). The stock ECM won't handle much in the way of mods. ( also, I suspect they will run out of the darn things eventually, I think it's out of production ) So a Race ECM, OR a PC3 is needed for any good performance mods. Dyno tuning is probably a good idea if you get the PC3. Though I see they have maps for a V&H & a K&N. ( not so with the race ECM, it just works. The PC3 just adds fuel by making the injector stay open a little longer? correct me guys, I have a carb. ) http://www.powercommander.com/804-211.shtml Airbox mods are next to free. See knowledge vault. ( I agree with Josh, my M2 has a modded box ) What I've found out is that a slip on muffler is usually not good for much power, though it will smooth out the power dip @ 3400 rpm the stock muffler gives you. ( built that way to pass EPA noise regs ) A Thunderbolt already has about twice the power of a same year Sportster. For more power, find a Race Exhaust ( I'm looking ). They ran out of ECM's last summer, then suddenly a new batch showed up. Keep in mind a new ECM comes with a $50 TPS calibration done at the shop. At one time PCIII's were getting a bad rap elsewhere on the board. As usual, ymmv. The FI Forcewinder lost a little of it's looks in my opinion compared to the carb version. It may just be me, but the extra plumbing bugs me. I can send a pic if you're interested. |

Ok...OK...so what you guys are saying is that all I NEED to get is the Option 1.) V & H slip on (or some other exhaust), a K & N Filter (gutted airbox), and a Race ECM (which is the same as the race ignition???) If so, that puts it at around $500 out the door (exhaust = $220, ECM = $215, K & N = $50, TPS = $50). OR option 2.) I could get the exhaust, K & N, and a PCIII (which is more $$ than the Race ECM) and then I would have to add the O2 sensor and have it dyno tuned (or download map)...putting me at around $700-800 (exhaust = 220, K & N = 50, PCIII = 330, O2 = 50, DYNO = 200???).... If all that is true, does the 1st option work as well as the 2nd?? I am sorry if I am being redundant, just trying to get all the info before I make a choice... Thanks again for the info (Message edited by essthreetee on June 02, 2005) (Message edited by essthreetee on June 02, 2005) |

IMO, if you're just looking at doing intake/exhaust mods, the race ECM will do just fine. I've not seen anything that indicates that PCIII gives you any additional benefit over the race ECM. Maybe if you get into headwork and such, but with just intake and exhaust, I'd just go with the race ECM (and did for that matter). |
