"The only benefit I'd see in getting a knee down is that theoretically you can carry more speed before you start losing traction..." I think it's just the hanging off that does that. Not the knee sliding as such. The sense of security comes from having a lean angle feeler. Or so I've been told. I've removed all but 1/8" of my front chicken strips w/ metzler M1's and have never touched a knee. I don't try though... I have scraped my toes with them tucked into the engine tightly though. |

Knee down on race track is nothing more than a "feeler" to give rider input. On the street it is useless and could get you banged up as there are way more unforeseen hazards lurking on our roads than on the track. Now shifting your body position for cornering makes total sense---but I have been told that that is one of the things our local police look for in some of the popular riding areas to tell if you are gonna get a ticket. |

Same here... That and passing on a double yellow. The cops here don't care too much about overall speed on the "good" roads. It's the little things they look for . |

Agreed. My Pirelli Skorpion Syncs are the first set of tires in my 4 years of riding that have no chicken strip front or rear...I've dragged my sidestand and pegs, but my knees would get pretty tore up if they touched down with jeans on! |

Slaughter-how much do you wiegh, 180? multiply that by 80mph=force 14400, football player-ave 230lbs*20ave speed=force 4600*2=9200 now perform repeatedly at least fifteen times in the time frame of three hours. remember these are averages...and I haven't taken a physics course in years, but I wouldn't call them wimps, might be riding with one sometime. |

I think you're supposed to use FPS instead of MPH? In any case... "Auto racing, bull fighting, and mountain climbing are the only real sports ... all others are games." - Ernest Hemingway |

In my last crash 6 weeks ago, I hit the ground at least 4 times AND the bike landed on me - 5 broken bones and a severe concussion. The dominant equation about kinetic energy is - 1/2 x M x V^2 - so velocity is the dominant factor. That's why a little .357 doing 1000 fps does so much more than 100 marbles thrown at somebody's chest at 90 fps - one is annoying, the other will kill you. (and a lot of my friends play football and NO tackle weighing 430 pounds has ever tackled a QB at 80 that I'm aware of) - it's an argument we always have over many beers } |

In my last crash 6 weeks ago What?!? Do you crash so often or did I miss something? How is the recovery going? 6 weeks isn't that long ago considering 5 broken bones. |

Yeah - in the past 2 years racing, I've had 5 crashes. 3 of them I got on and raced in the afternoon with some minor fixes, this was the doozie - a high-side in Turn 1 at Willow Springs. Not only was it a tumbling "flying Gumby" but the poor guy behind me ran into the helmet while I was on the ground. That Arai earned its money - 1 hard ground impact, then the bike/sidecase landed on my head, smashing it and 3, getting run into by the Ducati behind me - all in less than half a second! Larry Cochran - the Willow Springs Motorcycle Club referree said he hopes its the worst crash he has to see this year. I'll be out of the saddle a couple more months. Not counting the bike falling over on the trailer, I haven't had a "real" crash since last October. This was a day of contrasts - my first race podium in the Glendale Harley-Buell Middleweight Twins class - followed by my first major race crash. And in answer to the un-asked question - the bike hardly got any damage!!! (Message edited by slaughter on March 31, 2005) |

Slaughter, I think it's the sign of a true hardcore rider to throw himself on the ground to protect his bike. I wasn't as quick thinking. I let my bike do cartwheels down the freeway, but I did throw myself through the guardrail just in case the bike made it that far.

Well hell, I probably owe you a beer for making it through the accident, what I was getting at was the head on collisions where two folks running as hard as they can butt heads, 20mph-31fps if I wanted to do the math * 230 lbs = 4600 * 2 for two people= 9600 but I'm sure there's an exponential factor in there somewhere and when you wreck the forces are usually transverse forces not blunt, I often get into this argument myself with my coworkers as most of them are engeneeersss(train drivers). fun stuff if your the winner, plain hurts if your the loser, wrecking aint much fun neither as I have done some gaurdrail testing myself, but football seems to take a greater toll on your body in the long run, unless you break five bones and get a concussion of course, only had one of those-concussion- on my scooter! |

Ceejay - good point. It's kinda academic UNLESS you're the QB getting hammered! (and I'm not talking beers!) Yes - in vector analysis - it's the component of the vector normal to (perpendicular) the object. I'd be a lot worse off if I had fallen straight onto the ground at 80 instead of sliding along. That's why I don't go fast in the canyons. Going against a rock wall, K-rail or another vehicle is much harder to take than sliding out to a stop. At least I cushioned the bike from further impact. I got about $75K worth of damage to me, about $150 to the bike! I O U one beer ! (Message edited by slaughter on April 01, 2005) |

What kind of bike? When I wrecked last summer I needed new bars, mirror, grips, clutch lever and cable, shifter, paint job-with bondo, header, turn signal etc. so I got pi$$ed and redid the whole bike wish I would have cushioned my bike cause all I got out of it was roadrash, concussion, dislocated shoulder, nothing I haven't done before. I hope to make it back out that way someday as I was in North CA for work and I thought that 299 was the coolest road I had ever been on, is that you rolling it on in the corner-hell yea! |

It's my XB racebike (the one pictured in my profile) Left side controls - shifter, clipon, clutch lever. The frame got dented where it landed but is still race-ready. Bunch of scratches but I'll leave it scratched up til I get time to do a major overhaul. If I'm getting around better, and still have a couple months time to kill, I will do more of a tear-down and cleanup. I find out today if I can ditch the wheelchair and start on crutches! Wooo hooo! Broken collarbone made crutches difficult. Forgot to mention mashing the tail. I do all my own bodywork so that is not a big deal. (Message edited by slaughter on April 01, 2005) |

OUCH! good luck with the crutches, sounds like you were pushing it much harder than I was. I want one of those XB's for a race bike too, but wifey says no, gotta buy food and diapers for kids, one of these days.... once again hope to see an updated pic when you get back on that thing. |

Yeah - Ceejay - you have to take care of the Family! Especially since your kids are still in diapers! In a few years, they can be sold into slavery and you can go RACING!! (sorry about that!) |
