I am pretty sure I will pick up some PM rims in the near future. I need new tires, so I will purchase the rims and then just take them to get tires mounted, then put them on myself. Any advise as to new tires would be greatly appreciated. | ||

Dunlop D208's, Your bike came w/ D207's, and i swapped to the 208's on my 02. It will not last longer than about 7-9K miles (depending on how you ride). But they are good compound. If you're getting the PM rear wheel (5.5" wide), a 180/55 is the factory standard tire. Tires are kind of subjective, but the Metzeler M1 Sportec/Pirelli Diablo is highly recommended by riders who spend a lot of time in the twisties. How anyone can get 7-9,000 miles on a 208 is beyond me. | ||

7-9,000 out of 208s???? I wish I could get that out of them... The highest I have gotten out of one was 4,000 on the back tire, but that was with threads showing... That sad part is due to the lack of twisties in Fl, I still had plenty of tread on the sides, just not the middle.... I switched to 220s, but only have less than 300 miles on them so far... time will tell... I know the 220s are not the stickest tire, but I need a tire that I don't have to change every 3 months or so...  | ||

208s are great if you do track days or canyon carving only, but they do not last on the street, as paint shaker said I agree that 4000 is a lot of miles for 208s, but for track use, that is the racers choice in supersport. Fred | ||

DJ, Even with PMs the factory standard tire is a 170 not a 180. A 180 will fit fine but it is not the size it comes with from the factory. | ||

Bulliedan- any comment on which size (180 or 170) handles better? Everybody likes the way the fatter tire looks, but I'd rather run what handles best. | ||

whodom, that was my question too, I just called sport tire services, they said use the 180 on the 5.5" wheel, they said it works better than 170. Fred | ||

DJ, I sure can't speak for all of them, but my 2000 S3 with PM wheels had a 170 on the back when I got it, and it appeared to be the original tire (Dunlop 205). The owner's manual only lists the 170/60 rear tire size. Maybe it was a later change? | ||

Well i have about 80-85% highway driving (72 miles one way to work) and i can regularly get 7-8000 miles on my rear tires. 207 i got 9200, but there was zero tread left.... I am not an agressive rider, about 95% of the time, i am just doing normal riding. Not any good twisties with in 30 miles of my house.. lol | ||

I second the Pirelli Diablo's. I have them on my S1 and so far I love them. Not sure about milage as I just got them installed a few hundred miles ago but I've had several people tell me they wear great. Just my 2 cents. Hodakaguy | ||

170 will turn in quicker,180 looks more "macho".Jon I have used Bridgestones,Pirelli Dragons,Avon Azaros,Michelins,Dunlap 207,220 and who know what other #'s,and had good luck with all of them so it's really a matter of choice/cost/availability. | ||

170 will turn in quicker,180 looks more "macho". Ditto to Firemanjim's statement. I've had both the D205 180 & 170 rear tire on the M2, and I prefer the 170. Much faster on its feet. The question is what is the best all around street performance tire? I want traction and mileage. I've gone through one set of D205s on the M2 in 3500 miles and I have 2200 on the second set and they seem to be doing a little better (I've just been easier on this set) I can get between 5000-6000 miles on the Nighthawk's K505 Bias-Ply tires and have yet to lose traction. | ||

A lot depends on the wheel width you have. Carlos (M2nc), what wheel do you have on the back of your M2? You're not going to get the optimum performance capabilities out of a 180 on a 5" wide wheel. | ||

Thanks for the feedback regarding the 180/55 vs. 170/60 tires, but for those of you that spoke up, were you running the 5.5 inch PM wheel, or the standard 5 inch wheel? It does seem like the 180/55-17 is a more popular size recently, so depending on the tire, that may be your only choice. | ||

I always had the Michelin Pilot Sports and got around 6000 Kms on the rear and double that on the front. They seem to take a little while to warm up but then they are very confidence inspiring. I have a set of the new Michelin Pilot Powers - 170/60ZR17 and 120/70ZR17 and can't wait to try them. |
