I have a 2000 S3. It is completely stock except for the Race Air Filter. When I first installed the kit, I had some problem starting but that was about it. Shortly after installing the air filter kit, I dropped the bike off at my dealer for state inspection. Since I got it back, it has been riding very unreliably. It backfires very very often. Sometimes the bike will stall at speed, then backfire. I've had some times when I couldn't start the bike after a backfiring episode. The bike also hesitates and jerks at speed (usually at around 80mph/3500 rpm), sometimes leading to a stall and a backfire. I'm not getting any engine codes when I jumpering pin 1 and pin 2 on the data port and turning my key to on so I'm assuming that this is not a sensor issue. I thought it might be fuel. I've put some new gas in but I haven't run the original fuel down yet (it's no longer fun to ride my bike with the horrible performance). I also added STP fuel treatment. I replaced the O2 sensor. Everything I've done "seems" to make the situation slightly better but the backfiring has not gone away. So, my basic question is: will the race air filter work with a stock ECM or is that my problem? I've noticed a small pinhole in my exhaust pipe leading to the can. Could this be the problem? Is it possible that bad fuel could lead to these sorts of problems? I'm willing to put the hideous bread box back on if I have to but I'd prefer not to if there are other options. I've been looking for a Race ECM or Power Commander but they are pretty hard to find. Any suggestions would be great. Thanks. Jeff |

Aren't you in Pennsylvania? Bring it up and drop it off and I'll see what the deal is. Steve Ford |

Steve, I never see you when I stop up at the dealership anymore. I thought you left. Let me know when you'll be there and I'll drop it off. Jeff |

They stuck me back in the shop which is fine but the Buells need their own cheerleader, don't they? However, I'm there everyday but Thursday and Friday so bring it up and we'll get it sorted out and you go vroom. (Message edited by SteveFord on September 26, 2004) |
