Just returned from a great bike ride. Have always wanted to ride highway 4 in California and the Pacific coast highway in California, Oregon and Washington. Second day out, north of Amarillo, I hit a deer, or rather the deer hit me. Didn’t knock the bike down but damaged the bike and my left leg, knee and ankle. We stopped to repair the bike and see if I had anything broken. I didn’t, and my riding buddies did bodywork on my Road King with a fence post bending the engine guard back so I could shift the gears and the fender wouldn’t rub the front tire. We then continued on to New Mexico, Arizona, Utah, California, Oregon, Washington, Idaho, Montana, Wyoming, and back to Texas. Had I been riding my S3T instead of the Road King it might have been much worse might have knocked the Buell down. Blood and guts all over the bike, none of it mine. As it is $6,600 damage to the bike and I have knee surgery scheduled for next week. Lessons learned: 1) Keep your eyes peeled for wild life even in the middle of the day, 2) Ride with friends who can do bodywork with a fence post, 3) 6,000 miles in 15 days is far too ambitious for a bunch of 60 year olds, 4) Continue the ride if you possibly can, this turned out to a tremendous trip making lifelong friendships and memories, and finally 5) California Highway 4 is among the very best bike roads in the entire world. Ride it if ever you get the chance. |
