Apologies to the Mods for the duplicate posting. Wasn't getting any views in the original post. I readily admit I don't have a clue as to how old the battery is in my M2. Bought it 3 years ago and haven't changed it since. So...took the Buell to Bike Night this past Tuesday. It had been sitting for 7+ weeks since I was laid up from a crash with a distracted driver (not the Buell). I threw a trickle charger on for a couple hours prior and when I hit the button, the starter grunted a bit but engine hit and off I went. Came time to leave and click...click...click...nothing. Enlisted the aid of a few bodies and push started to get home and it's been sitting on a 800ma trickle charger since. Checked the voltage this morning and its reading 12.9V with no load (ignition off). Started the motor and bumped the RPM up to 1700-1800 and measured the voltage with the high beam/taillight lit and the voltage reads 14.2V for a few seconds, then drops to +/- 9-10V for a few seconds, then back up to 14.2. Very regular cycle which suggests to me that it isn't something like a bad connection--be too intermittent. Sounds weird to me and suggests a wonky voltage regulator but that the stator is prolly working. What surprised me was the way the voltage fluctuated when running with a load. Aren't VRs supposed to maintain a more or less constant voltage push from about 12.4-14.2V? Thoughts? I will do a new battery install if I must to make it though the good fall riding season but prefer to wait until spring. Not keen on buying a new battery that'll sit from Dec-Mar. |
