Ive been studying and goin back and forth on this concept and would like to hear some of your opinions as to what you believe. Is it necessary to vent if a can is used?
![](http://www.badweatherbikers.com/buell/messages/47623/846841.jpg) Current (non-vented) set up. Think this is ok? |

It has to breathe - can’t be a closed system. Does the “can” have a vent? |

come to think of it, I believe the can has vent holes in the top half. ill have to confirm when I get home but I'm almost certain it does. ill post a pic of it later. this little darlin is from NRHS. I'm digging the subtlety of it. |

I think a catch can would only be necessary if your engine likes to vent a lot of fluid, My S1 has just a small K&N vent mounted on the bottom of a loop under the carburetor, but my S3 which is newer with less miles has always had more oil come from the vent even with the XB rockers, I did install a catch can on it. |

That can does have vent holes in the top, I remember you sent me a picture of it. In general, you definitely need open airflow to let it breathe, otherwise they cease to be breathers, but yours had that little filter and holes in it to let the air flow. Using a catch can without a way to breath would be the same as using solid bolts to bolt the carb mount bracket to the heads. |
